for all those considering the savage edge/ axsis

OK so i am a huge savage fan but i recently discovered one of thier less than perfect designs. I had purchased on of thier Edge's for a cheap beater rifle and put a thin profile 20" barrel chambered in 300sav on it for a woods rifle. It came out decent enough considering i had less than 400 in the whole prodject. The problem came when i went in my very first hunt with it. I went to climb over a fence and the sling slipped off my shoulder and the rilfe fell into the grass. My horror was when i went to pick it up the stock had broken in half at the wrist. upon further examiniation i found that there was very little material in the wrist to begin with then to make it worse they perforated it with holes for no apparent reason. Now while looking all i can find for a replacement is the same stock again from savage for the tune of $105 and there is no aftermarket stock for this rifle. I realy dont want to put this stock back on it exspecial at half the cost of the rifle new, just to have the risk of the same thing happening again. Im also afraid if i want to restock and sell the rifle its value is going to be just that of the stock. I tried seeing what it would take to put a 110 LA style stock on it and it looks like it could be done but with alot of reinletting work, and the safety tang wouldnt look very good. So any one looking to buy or build a budjet savage get the stevens 200 instead its worth the extra $30-$50.

Thanks for the info but a little late. Bought one for my step son in 30-06. Shoots absolutely great but I'll take a look the wrist section. It's a camo model.

I got one for my wife, camo as well, in .243, re-barreled it to a .260, she has only shot it a few times. and likes it. I will have to look at it as well. Ron Tilley

Your not the first having a bad exsperience crossing a fence with a firearm.

 I bought a SS in 25-06...I thought it would be a way to another quick, cheap, clip, swap barrel rig...should have looked closer at the garbage hanging off the rear of the receiver...YES buy ANY other rifle...the only thing good on this POS was the barrel...it wouldn't shoot for SH** until I put it on a "regular" Sav LA...the stock flexed so badly I could move the POI up or down just by bending it at the stock slightly.

I DO like the mag system tho' and wish I could swap that along with the barrel. Right now I have a bolt/receiver I can't do a thing with and a POS stock I can't even begin to modify and filling the stock with foam/epoxy didn't help either, so until someone comes out with a solid aftermarket replacement stock that can use the mags, I will just swap barrels around whenever I want to use the 25-06...Savage also missed the boat when the used a 24" instead of 26" or longer with the 25-06.

i realy hate to buy another of these POS stocks from savage for $105 but im afraid im going to have to, too be able to sell the rifle. I think im going to put the 223 barrel back on it and unload it. Ive already found a stevens 200 action to put the 300 sav barrel on that can use the quality aftermarket stocks for savage short actions. I will lose the drop box magazine, but i believe Bell and carlson makes a DBM style stock for the model 10.

call savage and tell them what happened and suggest some design changes be nice about it and you will likley get a new stock.

If that don't work tell them they can have there rifle back you're buying a new Tikka t-3.

well i sat down this week end snd wrote a very civil letter to savage about thier design flaws in the Edge stock.Trying point out where improvements could be made, and included pictures of my broken stock. Dont know if i will hear back from them or not, I will keep every one updated when they do.

Not trying to stir anything up here but I was taught at a very young age to never ever cross a fence of any kind with my rifle slung onto my back. Is is one of the first things one should learn about gun safty, lay the rifle down cross the fence and then pick up the rifle.

you are right i shouldnt have been carrying it slung to cross the fence, the hunter safety text book does say to unload the rifle set it down then cross and reload. The problem with that is i would have had to set in a drainage ditch to do so. I will give savage some credit the safety did keep the rifle from firing even through a fall that was apperently violent enough to break the stock.
