Ejecter pin adj.

I have been thinking of buying the tool from Sinclair's that removes the ejecter pin (Remington 40X) Everyting I have read says it will help accuracy?
Two of my blots will eject the empty cartrige all the way around backwards.
So if I buy this tool do I get a special spring or grind off a 1 1/2 rings of the spring? The ejecters on these bolts are very stiff, you can hardly depress them! Will adjusting the spring tension on these ejecter pins help with accuracy?
Any help and advice would be apreciated.

All you need is a 1/16" punch and a pair of snips. It sounds like you haven't removed one before so lay a rag over the end of the bolt in case things fly apart when you knock the cross pin out. You can reduce the length of the spring by about 3 coils. Sneak up on this. most of the time I trim them back until they just barely put pressure on the ejector pin. Then if your not happy with that go looking for a weaker spring. We used to take them out of ball point pens.

Like Dave says there's no need for a special tool to remove the ejector, just a pin punch of the correct size and some care.

One thing I've noticed is that the Remington extractor can hang onto a case pretty fiercely making removal of a fired case difficult. A tiny bit of spring pressure on the ejector so that the neck end of the case is pushed outward just a bit when the bolt is open makes fired case retrieval easier.

Brownells sells a light spring set that has a spring in it that works well to replace the original '59 Buick coil spring that Remington uses. The PN is:080-950-325AA, and they're $19.97 for 12 springs (2 ea of six sizes).

I used to get great springs to fit Remmy triggers & take them back to a workable 3 pound out of Bic cigarette lighters - about the only good I did myself back in those bad old nicotene days. Maybe they would suit this job, maybe the quality has gone off.

To remove the ejector, just drive the 1/16" punch in tapping the retainer pin out the other side. Make sure and catch the retainer pin when you drive it out. Before removing the punch from the hole after driving the retainer pin out, make sure to cover the ejector with your finger to keep it from flying across the room. Remove the 1/16" punch with your finger over the tip of the ejector and then you can drop the ejector and spring out the end.

When I install an ejector and spring, I take an empty cartridge case, slip it under the extractor and then push the ejector back with the case head which lets the d slot in the ejector pin line up with the ejector retainer hole. If you start the retainer pin in from the short side, you can tap it in to catch the ejector pin with a small hammer before you have to finish it to depth with a pin punch.

As for the Accuracy

Remingtons are notorious for having way too much ejector tension. It stands to reason that it would push against one side of the case, cocking the case in the chamber.
Lets just say that removing a lot of that tension sure will not hurt anything.......jackie

Thanks!

Thanks to everyone!
I will use this experience and advice...
Like I said 2 of my 40X's really flip the empty cases around backwards.
I will use the 1/16 punch and carefully ping the pin out into a towel.
Shorten the spring and experiment with the tension.
This is a great place to learn things along with the wonderful people!

I have one of the Sinclair tools you are talking about and they work really slick. Worth every bit of the money.
I like it because it holds everything in place while you tap out the cross pin and you will probably have to remove and install the ejector spring several times to get it just right.
