Doug, I figure you should just pay for it by yourself as a "Good-Will Jester" to the Tomball Club and all the Crawfish Shooters!

This way you could have your "Crawfish and eat it too"!

Good Luck.

Brad

Doug
You may have 40 shooters sit down & eat crawfish. Then there is the time issue, when do you plan to eat. We usually take about 45 min at lunch. That includes setting flags after rotation. That leaves about 15 to 20 min for your crawfish. The other option is after the match. But that is when most people are ready for taht cold beer or stiff drink, which there is no drinking on Tomball range. Any ideas. Russell M

The crawfish eating is and was always done after the last match on Saturday when everyone can sit down not during the event.

The only other idea I have is to change the name or not have it at all over and out I'm done... By the way Russell the idea is to get the crawfish match back to what it was or to have more than 40 shooters, Thats why you will only have maybe 40 shooters because nobody wants to promote it and at one time the club was paying the boy scouts 3k to be the taget crew. Not knocking the boy scouts at all and they did great but 3k. For 3k i'll drive down from Dallas with my boys from the hood and do it...

The Crawfish used to be a major match for our region.

I'm done

Hey Brad

You know how to get ones CRAW don't you !!!(LOL) and I have been doing my good will evertime I pay $100.00 dollars to shoot a registered match, I keep someone else from coming in last place

Doug, Everybody knows that the Crawfish should be somewhere in Louisianna. The Tomball Gun Club has tried to keep it alive over these years. It ain't easy.

We did have Crawfish one year, about 1/4 of the shooters didn't even stick around. No beer on the range is the killer.

The real reason everything worked at the old Hub City Club was because of a few dedicated men. When they either died or got too old, nobody there gave a damn either............jackie

Dough
I did check with the hotel about using there lobby as you asked. They said no,but you can rent one of there conference rooms. Russell M

Well Then

** The only thing left to do is just listen to the old stories of how good it used to be. !!

** Thanks Russell for the atempt, Rent one of the rooms LOL, I'm sure we will pile up in a room and carry on ..................You know us old timers are olny good till about 9 pm anyway.

** And Jackie, Thats a pretty bold statement on the Tomball gun club trying to keep it alive.... But you are right it should be back across the border..

When I first started Benchrest, Tomball had a big match called "The 'Hole' Enchilada". This was back in the mid '90's.
Hank Faulkner was the man who did all of the leg work, much like Louis Laingelise did with the Crawfish. They served Mexican Food, the match had no less than 60 shooters. It was the first spring match in the Region.

Hank died of a massive heart attack in 1998, and that ended that.

At this time, Russel Mathews is doing a great job as Tomball's Registered Match Director. But he is still facing the same problems as all directors in the past. That being, you can't please all of the people all of the time.

Tomball is a Private Club, where the vast majority of the 275 members could care less about Benchrest. In fact, many look upon the Matches as just another week end they can't use the range. Also, the BOD's are very wary that a Match might cost the club money. They are really not that interested in making any, they just do not want anything to cost the club any.

You get the idea that the Club has never promoted any of the Benchrest Activities, they just tolerated them. The same holds true now.

Most shooters do not have a clue what it takes to hold a Match. Even the Club Matches I am Match Director of have certain requirements that must be met, or things do not come off very well. Multiply that by 10, and you can see the problems that Russel faces.

You want the truth. Most Benchrest Matches do not fall by the wayside because lack of participation, they fall by the wayside because very few are willing to put forth the time and effort that it takes just to get the gates open.

One reason some big name matches are a success is because of the monetary reward. If you are in a Private Club, you are doing this simply for the love of shooting. Match directors that rent a range and put on a large match can reap the monetary benefits. Just do the math. If you are guaranteed 100 shooters, you can't loose money. If you score a National Event, and are an astute business man, you can make the effort well worth your while.

But those are few and far between. Most local Matches are run by a guy that is there at daybreak unlocking the gate, and there picking up the garbage when it's over. For nothing more than a "Thank You".........jackie

I agree with you and do understand what it takes. Just because I don't see behind the scenes does not mean we don't understand.

Let me say I also understand about the so called "Thank You", I'm in the commercial construction industry, I may be responsible for $12-15 million dollars in projects at any one given time as a project manager. Sure I get a pay check but as well in my industry the things you do for free or behind the scene are still there that are not figured in ANY budget. Granted everyone wants to make a dollar but what alot of people don't remember is how far the small things will go with a owner. In my blue collar work force I will always take a "Thanks" or a "Thank You".

There is no greater feeling in knowing that you have done your very best to make something happen to please the end user, shooter, owner of the building, Architect or whom ever.

I believe you also understand that even in your business, You have had to gone the extra mile in doing whats right or to make your customer happy and had repeat business just because you stepped up your game. Again your getting paid to make those calls as I am. But in my eyes the same runs true for the clubs across the country who are activlely trying to promote this sport. Of course you don't see it on national TV or highlights on the news unless a stray bullet goes out of the range... Then all hell brakes loose..........

All I'm trying to say is with the attitude of most of those club members who sit at the meetings should care. We the shooters love to come to the matches and shoot, honestly but whom ever the match director is that steps on the plate should be devoted to promoting the matches......

I guess last but not least I did not have my priorities in line.... I did not understand that it was more important to be able to drink at the range..... Don't get me wrong I am guilty of throwing back a few at the end of the day.... It's just sad to see which way some things go...

Hope to see you at the match and I do hope that we still have a great turn out and you still can't beat getting to shake somebody's hand that you have not seen in awhile....

...........Doug..........

Doug, at this time I feel a little guilty even discussing Benchrest Topics, because aside from running our Tomball Club Matches, I am a non participant. We are that busy.
This economic cycle in our industry will end one day, (they always do), but for the time being, just about all of my time is dedicated to my Business, and what's left to my Grandkids.

In a couple of years I will be complaining about not enough work and plenty of time to shoot. But for now, you get it while you can........jackie

Jackie

Your right on....... A man has to do what a man has to do.. But just remember time will pass you by and you need to enjoy what you can when you can and even make time for the other... Money makes one happy, money can make one greedy, but one thing for sure I have not heard anybody saying you can spend it when your gone....

So take the time Jackie and enjoy, I'm 54 and I am slowing it down...... My industry will make you hate people, call them stupid but when the day is over you shake there hand and move on... I'm glad that when I was younger I was one hell of a go getter, worker and investor and did not know the meaning of slow down or sleep, became very well liked in my industry by many. Now it is time to start enjoying life with my family and friends the best way I can. I still need to make my living and provide but I will enjoy it along the way...

We will miss you at the match. We will put a R.I.P sign over on your flags and reloading bench that is in the barn !!! LOL

Take Care
Doug

Doug, I haven't fired a Benchrest Rifle since before Thanksgiving of last year.

Let's see, If I remember, the bullet comes out the skinny end.........jackie

Needle !!!! more like a switchblade when it comes off your keyboard.... We have been talking about this for along time and after our last match down their it was brought up again about mudbugs, Russell told us to look some crawfish guys up and see where it went... I took the liberty of doing so and I have found out where it is going to go... All I have wanted to do is help get the interest back into it and see if there was a way to make it happen but since shooters can not drink on the range we will just drop the whole thing...

Nothing against Russell at all, he has his hands full. All I wanted to do was find someone who would cater it and how much it would cost. The rest was up to the club and the shooters... No big deal, I'll still be their, shoot and go out to dinner like we always do and hope we hook up with some of the other shooters, go back to the motel, sit around, have a few more adult beverages, tell some more stories and say man if I had only shot one more small group.

Maybe you could come down and just hang out with us and stir the pot in person.........LOL..........

Good to hear from you brother Butch

He how do you think I feel ? I have been MIA for almost 2 years myself.....Thats why it's time to re-route things and try to shoot more...

Yes the bullet does come out the skinny end but what is the little round flat thing that goes in the bottom of the case that helps hold the powder in...

good CATERED MEAL, and most of all GETTING TO VISIT WITH FRIEND, PRICLESS

Mike

Glad you feel that way but it won't be happening................If you want mud bugs you will have to look for a place to go eat them in Houston.... Someday the match will be back across the border where it needs to be....

All I can say is "Remember The Alamo"
