I tried everything today to get 8208PD shooting today with no avail. This has been the only time since i first laid hands on this powder i didnt leave the range with a smile. The weather was much cooler today with the dew point hovering around 50 points. temp was 65 i do beleive. Weird i think. I know the seating depth for the barrels i shot today, yes to different barrels. And i i walked through the powder charges really careful, but nothing. I havent read much about this powder the last few weeks so i thought i would share my experience today with you all. Really shouldnt say, but maybe this powder needs a little humidity to shoot well??? Anyone have anything to add?
In case your wondering i went from 29.0gr up to 30.4gr and i just didnt see anything that would make me want to repeat the load. big 2's and 3's were the best i could muster. The morning was very nice and a well needed brake from the heat wave we have delt with for the past 10 days. Needless to say i enjoyed my morning alone at the range, so not all was lost. Lee

Sorry Jerry. The newest offering currently being sold. I guess i should have made that a little more clear. Lee

lee...just list the lot number so we dont get lost...i have 5 different lots of pd plus one lot of new imr commercial...

Still testing as you know Lee... AAC122910 8208 PD Similar to the real Dupont IMR8208 in ways but DIFFERENT in others....

40 - 50 % range of humidity @ temps > 75deg is a "tipping" point... Above 50% 30.0gr+ yields a tune again.
Below about 40% <29.5gr yields a tune again...

One day in particular I was shooting right around 85deg @ >60% and try'n my typical 29.0 -29.5 loads.... Big threes...
Frustrated, I >>cranked<< the Harrels up a whole number... 30.5gr yielded what the condition was REALLY doing to the bullets... About a bullet... I was able to shoot high ones.. Again.

Week before, it was 90+ deg @ < 30% humidity... 30gr+ yielded just big threes..... 29.8 was better... 29.5 was CLOSE... 29.1 was IT....!

Just my findings....And repeatable in three guns, 2 Kriegers and 1 Bartlein, all the same chamber..

30.4 was probably juuuust below "the" tune for your gun in the cool humid condition...

Lou,
Have you been able to determine what it is? I have a case of it, and it does show promise. It looks like N200, but is slower burn rate like N201.

Michael

I purchased a case and it looked promising, so I ordered a second case. The fellow I spoke with said the powder was from
Alliant and was loaded by AAC . He said this was 1983 stuff related to the Iran-contra thing Oliver north was involved in.
It does not look Dupont at all, more like Norma, so maybe . I could be wrong, but maybe some moly in this stuff.

It might not be 8208 but its a hell of alot closer then that XBR(8208) crap that hodgdon put out..

Hate to tell you but that's not 8208

Hate to tell you too that IMR8208xbr is neither IMR nor is it 8208. It is a powder that was produced for Hodgdon by ADI for a different application other than benchrest. But, properly loaded it is a valuable item in benchrest shooting toolkit and has produced some winners. IMR8208xbr was made at the request of Hodgdon products manager Ron Reiber for that special application. If you doubt any of this call Hodgdon and ask to speak to Mr Reiber or Bob Hodgdon.

Hallelujah...! I got a witness... XBR does have its uses... Though none that I've found in Benchrest that other powders don't do better... Though, A 9 twist 204 ruger Shilen SM with custom 45 & 50gr pills,
Does shoot XBR well... But so does N135 and 4895.... Though..... I admit XBR through the measurer is a touch better.

After giving up on 8208XBR for 6 PPC I tried it in my 220 Beggs barrel and it shot better than Benchmark which was my go to powder for the 220 Beggs before I found XBR . Other than a 20 Tac with 40 gr. BT's I have found no other uses for it .

Hi Rodney,
I usually feed my 220 Beggs V V 133. I might have to try XBR as I have a jug or 2 it lying around. About what loads are you using and what weight bullet? I'm using Cheek's 52 grainers.

Best,
Dan Batko

Dan,
I'm using 52 gr. Cheek bullets and usually load 27.9 to 28.3 grs of XBR . I start out at 28 grs and see how the group looks. My 220 Beggs barrels run 21" to 22" in length and from my experience what lot # the XBR is doesn't seem to matter like it does as when trying to get a 6 PPC to group with it .

Rodney

Thanks, Rodney,
I'll have to give it a try.
Best,
Dan Batko

As i look back over the last year of posts, it occures to me the that during the winter months, XBR seems to"work" for sum, but as it warms up it starts giving fits? anyone else notice this?

XBR isnt exactly what i thought it was in the beginning. I had one shilen barrel that just loved that stuff but only the test lot #4736. The test lot #4736 only came in 1lb jugs and i was hot to trot finding as much of that lot as i could. LOL!! Little did i know was that that one shilen barrel was the only barrel i have had since that would shoot that stuff. That shilen shot it well when the weather was cool and it shot decent when it was hot, but it wont shoot for me in any other ppc barrel i have hot or cold. I still have around 10lb of that stuff in 1lb jugs that i have no clue with what to do with it. A good friend of mine that shoots long range says it will work in a 6BR with 105gr bullets so i still have a little hope on my investment. Its all fun though, wouldnt you agree!! Lee

I havent put it through my 6 ppc yet, but was fooling around in febuary and loaded up a bunch of 223 to shoot in my XP. It did rather well loaded on the warm side, enough so I bought a few (4) more pounds of the same lot just in case. I will be curious to see if it holds up this summer. May even try a few test loads in 308 just for grins. And yes its all in the fun. So did you hold on to that JJ rest? what do you think of it?
Ethan

The JJ rest is tops no question, but i prefer a farley. I sold that JJ. Let me know how that XBR works this summer, i will be curious to know.. Thanks Lee
