When I bought my Jet BDB 1340 lathe I found the gear cover at the end of lathe also covered the back gear lever. I realized that I would have to leave off the cover to turn down the tenon and switch to back gear for threading while having the barrel in a rear spider. Not too safe. I'm not quick enough to thread at 240 RPM and liked 60 much better. After looking at the setup I decided to cut out a small hatch, reattach it with a hinge and put a small handle on it. Worked great and it was safer. I think this would also apply to other lathes and makes life easier with a spider or collet closer. Just a passing thought today, I hope it helps someone.

Next project - make a collar and use headless recessed screws on that spider...?
