Build Your Own

it was the best target I had printed , not the best for 100 yards true....

My 'custom' gun uses a trued Savage 10FP action from 2001. It has worn three barrels, and the current one is an L-W pre-fit with a .260 Rem SAAMI chamber. To set up the H/S, I basically use a resized casing as a H/S Gauge, hand tighten the barrel against the case shoulder until I feel some significant resistance, then tighten the barrel nut. The nut takes up some lash from the threads, and results in a nice, moderate bolt drag with a fresh resized case.

So how would I have a properly resized case to use for the H/S'ing? Well the barrel was used there before, and the dies have been sitting undisturbed in the Dillon RL550B toolhead; so the resized cases from before still have the same dimensions that worked so well with the barrel the last time.

Not quite BR technique, it's still a relatively commonly used method with Savages.

Owing to the SAAMI chamber, I have to work a bit harder with my Savage; but the satisfaction is greater when things click.

Finally got the loads down pat, where I am happy with them. Here is a 3 shot group at 100 yards.....3 shot 100.jpg

That powder is so far off from what is best youre doing very well if thats 100yds. You should shoot some ftr matches with it.

looks pretty damm good to me , so why is it far off, because the experts say so.....

The experts know burn rates and how case fill affects accuracy. You could use unique or bullseye too. As well as that gun came together and as good as it shoots you really should carry it to some matches. Youre shooting winning benchrest groups. It would be ashame to not go get some trophies with your handiwork.

You need to have thick skin here.
if this is aa target rifle
go shoot 5-5 shot groups with your best load.

if the average is under .25, you have done good.
but 3 shot load development groups are not rifle "average".

if it is a hunting rifle...some of the top makers use 3 shot data.
