Michael, check the other forum. There are two threads concerning Midland. - Ronnie

Don't worry Conrad, they are not shooting buffaloes. :)

A little more explanation.

Traditionally, Regions of the NBRSA and IBS, (the two major Sanctioning Bodies in 100-200 yard Benchrest), have had major matches that have a "Name". This Name generally reflects something about the part of the Country the Match is held.

For instance, In The Gulf Coast Region, Inwill mention three Named Matches. The Crawfish, The Bluebonnet, and the Buffalo Shoot.

The "Crawfish" gots it's name from its originol location in Laffayette Louisianna, home of "the mud bug". The Match is now held in Tomball Texas, (argueably NOT the Crawfish Capitol of the World), because the Range in Laffayette was forced to close, and no one in that State seemed interested in holding the Match. Tomball stepped up to the plate, keeping the Name, and letting the tradition live on.

The "Bluebonnet" is held in the Spring in New Braunfels Tx. A drive through Central Texas at that time of the year will make it obvious as to why this monikor was chosen.

The "Buffalo Shoot" is a Midland tradition, I am not sure if any Buffalo ever roamed that particular area, but it sure looks like they might have, and it holds with maintaining the West Texas tradition.

Other Matches in other Regions include the "Cactus" in the Phoenix, The "Rattlesnake" at Raton New Mexico, "The Shamrock" in Georgia, (held near Saint Patrick's Day), The East West Shoot Out in St Louis, and, well you get the idea.

Hope this helps in giving you a little insight into the BR World........jackie

Name that shoot

Thanks Jackie for your explanation of the names of various shoots. I would like to know the origin of the name "the fire walker". I also have heard of other little known BR shoots in the past that, alas, are no longer in existence. These include the Augmentation Mammoplasty held in Beverly Hills, the Swamping Refugee Boat held in the Florida Keys, the Botox Sneer held in Nanci Pelosi's congressional district, and the Teleprompter held in Obama's. There were others that never got off the ground due to unforeseen events. These include The Mother Of All Benchrest Matches sponsored by Sadam Hussain, My Argentinean Soul Mate in South Carolina and the biggest flop of all: the Bipartisanship NBRSA/IBS Match in Washington DC. Dr. Tim,
Are you off your meds again. Or I guess on the other hand have you been using that RX pad for your own use? :)

Actually the traditional range of the North American Bison (known as the Buffalo) exteded as far south as the Nuevo Leon, Mexico. During cooler times of the year the area around Denton would have been prime Buff grazing territory.

The Firewalker in Colorado: how it got it's name

It all began a couple of decades ago at the range in Northern Colorado. After a day of fine match shooting, a few guys were camping at the range. The BBQ was lit and some meat was blistered. I believe that a few adult beverages may have been consumed. The famous gunsmith Dan Dowling might have placed well that day and some manly bragging naturally followed. One thing led to another, the BBQ was accidently tipped over and the coals spread out on the ground. Dan may have said he could imitate those native islanders in the art of walking on the hot coals (this may be where the adult beverages came into play). I guess a few of his comrades stepped up to the task and the story goes that a few pair of shoes were ruined and the smell of burning rubber permeated the air. The Firewalker was born. Every September we have a big steak cookout and a good time is had by all at this great facility.

The Muy Grande came next. We decided to have a weekend of nothing but Unlimited class. 5 shot on Saturday and 10 shot on Sunday. Don Mulhall and I were sitting around and we decided it needed an name. Don said it was all big guns so he said we should call it the "Muy Grande". The name stuck and it is coming up in October. It is a great match. Come join us and we'll treat you good!
