Can someone with benchrest experience tell me what magnification scope would be good to shoot benchrest to 300-400 yards? Im looking at a Leupold 6.5-20 VXIII. I want to make sure 20X is sufficient for this distance since ive never shot bechrest at this distance.
Thanks
Kevin

BR scope

The Leupold 6.5-20X is a fine scope, I have several of them. I shoot in 500 M groundhog matches, and I can tell you that 20X is not enough at 300 - 500First place, the Leupold has 1/4 min clicks and for a good benchrest scope, you want 1/8 min clicks. A good fixed power scope would be a 36X. The Weaver is a good one. In a variable, I would want something that goes to at least 32X for the shooting you contemplate.

fixed or variable power scope

Not a benchrest shooter. But i put a fixed 36 power Leupold on my old gun to see what i could do at 300 yds. When the sun is out the heat waves and mirage can be over bearing if you dont shoot a lot. Now i would buy a variable that goes to the higher powers.

I do shoot Benchrest. The smallest scope I have is 36X. My favorite is 45X.

For years I shot 6.5x20 Leupolds modified to 18x40x by Dick Thomas but in its original form at 20X is just not at all Ideal for serious Benchrest.

36x Min

Started shooting benchrest with a 24x weaver and hard to see the bullet holes at 200yds switched to a 36x Sightron Big sky and am very happy with that.

The Leupold Var-x III 6.5-20x is a very fine scope for groundhog shooting but for egg shoots or benchrest shooting only I would suggest looking for a used Leupold 40x or 45x Competition scope they can usually be had for around $850 give or take . For IBS 600 yd. Benchrest I use a NightForce 12-42x BR and a Leupold Comp. 45x. I can see bullet holes better at 600 yds. with the Leupold 45x when light conditions allow them to be seen.
