AR with 16,000 RDs

Yes the title reads correct. I have a friend that says his friend has a AR in 204 Ruger that has 16,000 rounds thru the barrel and still can hit a prairie dog at 500yds more often then then he misses. I am saying that if he had any thing close to 16,000 rds thru it he would not be able to hit a baseball at 100yds more often the he would miss. Thanks for you reply:eek::eek::eek:

You did ask for "replies" :)

"baseball" I agree with you BUT

here is a twisted opinion.....

#1- IIRC the Super Shoot was once one using a barrel with 11,000 rounds thru it.... properly cared for, barrels can last a long time.

#2, the difference between a really GOOD AR15 and a bad one is minimal. IME a really good AR will honestly agg around 1/2moa leaning towards 5/8moa with the owner treasuring those occasional 1/4moa groups.... whereas just about any AR15 platform can be made to agg around 1moa

1moa is about 5" at 500yds. This brings us to

#3, a prairie poodle ain't a baseball ;) the doggie hisself is at least 2 baseballs tall and the area betwixt the balls is filled in so it has more like 3 baseballs of area whether posted or running flat..... now you add ANOTHER baseball of height for bouncing a bullet into him..... so that makes him at least 3 balls tall for a typical shot,

OR, if he's standing broadside you've got at least 1/2 square foot to hit and roll him....

Even a inch-and-a-quarter gun will hit lots of prairie dogs where it'd only hit a baseball 1 time out of 20....

back when I shot high power, a local had an ar rifle with close to 9000 rounds thru
it and had me swap out the bbl. it would still shoot under 2" at 300 yards.
I still shoot that bbl, tho cut to 18" and rechambered.
do not sell good ar's short. tho most ar's are pretty poor.

The first melonited Shilen barrel we pulled out had 10741 rounds. I had to coerce my buddy that we pull it before he headed out to the Nationals at Camp Perry.

He was so hesitant to re-barrel because the last match he shot at 600 was 198-10X. He just got burned by the wind coupled with the anxiety to shoot a clean. The 8 as shot #20. Not bad for a 73 year old service rifleshooter.

I still have the barrel, will install it in an upper and test it with scope on the bench .

At least you caught it an corrected yourself, Al.

I see far more egregious errors in magazines and commercial web sites all the time. I guess they don't have a budget for spell checkers and grammer checkers.

Joe Amico, buddy of John Pierce, had a ppc that he claimed had 27,000 rounds through it. Yes, 27,000 rounds. It just so happened that Jim Harrington or Hawkeye was at the match with the brand new to Benchrest Bore Scope that had just came out. When he heard of Amico’s claim he asked if Joe would like to have his bore scoped. Joe obliged him and when he saw the bore Harrington said the bore looked more like the entrance to Mammoth Cave than it looked like a rifle bore. He offered to exchange Joe’s barrel for a new one so he could use it as a bad example. We were all aghast when Joe refused the offer.
By the way, that barrel couldn't hit the broad side of a barn unless you took it off the rifle and threw it at the barn.

We had a M240 machine gun barrel that we put over 60,000 rounds on in testing. It only had shadows of rifling left at the last 4" to the muzzle. It still shot a 12" group at 200yds, which was considered acceptable for a machine gun.
