First of all, we gotta' select freshwater fishes cuz some of the saltwater stuff is truly delectable.......
In fresh water. Until you've had White Sturgeon (tastes like Halibutt SHOULD taste
) or cold water walleye.......... there just ain't NUTTIN' like a Columbia River walleye.......Now, if you've had all three then I'll stand corrected. I'll still DISAGREE
but I'll stand corrected.And a Spring Chinook only hours off the salt is pure candy.......IF you're a salmon eater.
But yeahh, I'll still eat halibut.

the halibut is great but i sure do like a good alaskan smoked salmon up there its done over alder wood and its fantastic but the best i ever had was a toss up between some ny smelt deepfried or some 6 and 7 inch high mountion stream native trout panfried

I've caught the Salmon run at Olcott several times. Man what a fish!! It's like getting into a barroom brawl when you hook into one. I've had them crush the hooks on a crankbait.

For years, US magazines have fed me the story that fishermen your side of the world use scientifically crafted lures to catch wily species that are all grunt, balls & bones for the sole purpose of being photographed with them or to have them mounted & displayed.

About those lings.......
I'm of the opinion that "ling cod" just refers to any ugly toothy greyish speckled critter that one can yard off the bottom. Around here (WA and OR) Ling Cod (also called Burbot) look kinda' like that one. Alaskan Ling too although the AK ones seem to have even bigger heads and mouths. But when I lived in NH they caught freshwater and saltwater "Ling Cod" that were shaped differently. More fish, less fin.
And when I lived in Minnesota we caught "Ling Cod" also called Eelpout and Meseye, which were much more eel-like with a fin running clear down the back and around to the vent. Twisty, slimy, ugly and tasty. I remember pulling a four foot eelpout up into an icehouse at about midnite, he nearly came up the hole backwards and about slimed the joint once we got him on the floor, twisting like a snake with a bellyache. We were 11 miles out on Mille Lacs lake in the middle of a blizzard......it's 22 below outside and we've got a 6wk old baby along ....... the guy who brought us out told my wife "so doesn't THAT look tasty" and she said "If you'll just kill and butcher that thing and wipe the place down I'll have it cooked up by the time you get cleaned up!"

So here's a nice eatin' salmon, this guy was caught this Spring near Vancouver WA but it was in the ocean just days before....... see how bright? We're only allowed to keep one per day of these little bright guys but MAN they eat good! The black dots on the gills are called "sea lice" and these fish are still so fresh off the deep water that they flash rainbow color as they die. A salmon like this is so good you can basically eat it raw if you want. I did good on them this Spring, 4 trips out I brought home 4 fish.
And then a Columbia White Sturgeon, just to show that they're real. My foreman caught this one his first time out. He'd never hooked anything bigger than a 9-inch trout before.........This one is just over the allowed keeper size, they get to 12-14ft long........ A 4-5 footer is truly fine eating no matter how you prepare it. Baked it's like Halibut for flavor and texture but without the fishy taste. Even non-fish-eating women will chow this stuff down. And it's firm enough that you can jerk it for trail food.
I've never taken a pic of a Walleye..... with them you either KNOWS, or you don't. Best tasting fish in the world.

In this part of the world they're called Rockfish or just Rock. To those who are not from the land of pleasant living (MD) they are called stripers or striped bass. My personal record is 42". When they get to working a school of Alewives on top it's a blast, almost 1 fish per cast. We're allowed 2 per day over 18".

I've heard burbot called ling cod, but that's a freshwater fish. Our saltwater lings have to be at least 36" before you can keep em, the one in the pic was 44" and went 40#'s. I have a friend that runs a charter on Kodiak, and he takes lings in the 50-60" range.

The fan is used for about 12 hours before smoking to form a pelicle on the fish, and then for about 2 days after smoking to properly dry the fish. As my smoker is relatively small compared to the fire box, I only smoke the fish for about 2-3 hours, however long it takes the alder logs to finish smoldering.
And my favorite way to catch fish is with a net

Passed by Townsend Marine two wks ago and wanted to stop in and meet ya, but was ona tight schedule. Good thing I did not as I did not realize you pulled the pin and retired.
And now I see your struck with the same qaundry as I, Accurate rifles and Walleyes... Do I buy a new color depth finder/GPS or a new action. A new St. Croix Legend or a 30" Krieger... What a quandry... Oh well, back to the lefs'e, eh?

First couple times we stayed up at Holter lake we thought they were kidding about the walleyes but they do taste just as good as any around.

i like hunting BUT i LOVE fishing!!
I have 2 sons and a daughter that live at home ages 9,8 and 4. we go to a farm pond in the summer and catch a fish fry of bass and bluegill several times a year. i get such a kick from my 4 year old as he gets so excited about fishing. he is a special needs child and fishing is good theropy for him. he needs full time assistance to fish but it is a joy to watch him respond so positively to this activity. Fred

Been fishing that middle and lower Columbia for walleyes off and on since 1981.
Back before the Boldt decision...it was like this old ex-Minnesota walleye guide (me) had died and gone to walleye heaven.
WOW!....and nobody knew.....!!! Nobody!
And below John Day...@ Rufus, Biggs, Maryhill, Miller Island, etc .....it wasn't unusual to have 50 fish days (2 guys)....no fishermen....and no nets in the walleye holes.
Just me, my buddy and navigation depth map....
........and no... we didn't keep a bunch. As always... Selective harvest...kept a few smaller ones.
