Info for those looking for F-Class matches in Washington...

From time to time, we get contacted by people looking for F-Class matches here in Washington state. Usually the comment is something along the lines of 'there are NO F-Class matches listed in Washington'. Here's a little hint for you...


There are dozens of F-Class matches every year! Probably more than you can find time and money to go to! Some weekends it comes down to where *you* want to go, as there can be multiple matches on a given weekend.

Where are all these matches, that people seem to have trouble finding them?

They are right there in the High Power Rifle schedule.

Remember, F-Class is a sub-class of NRA High Power. (Emphasis mine) Almost any match explicitly marked 'Prone' or 'Palma' in the schedule is open to F-Class as well. Right now, there are plenty of F-Class shooters, but they tend to be kind of scattered out and in order to have a decent sized match... it ends up being a combination of conventional Prone shooters and F-Class shooters.

Another thing to keep in mind is that many clubs/ranges have a general rule of having to have at least 5 competitors in a class for $$$ awards. Less than 5 F-Classers... probably not going to have awards in F-Class. 4 Open class shooters and 3 TR shooters... probably just going to have one big 'F-Class', rather than breaking it down further. That's just the way it works!

So....
  • F-Class is part of NRA Highpower and Fullbore, it is NOT a seperate discipline.
  • In most places in the US, you are unlikely to find enough F-Class shooters to hold dedicated tournaments without holding an event short of an F-Class Regional or higher level match. Fortunately, F-Class is welcome at most NRA prone matches nationwide. (Match directors who turn away F-Class shooters at all but the US National Matches at Camp Perry are really doing the sport a disservice.)
Since NRA Highpower is the largest form of NRA competition (in both numbers of classified shooters, and events), this means there are far more events to attend than you might imagine.
 
Up around Galesberg, IL there is a small club called the Rivoli R&P club. They host 1K matches on a regular basis and F-class is always included.

I believe they have a match coming up the weekend after this one.

The club is actually located in New Windsor, IL. The matches are a lot of fun.

Give them a try if you are from N. Illinois.

While I appriecate the insight, I must disagree with you about my statement being wrong on "all accounts". What I was referring to is the fact that there are not many "F-Class" shoots that are listed as F-Class... As a result, we must look under the "High Power" or 'Prone' or 'Palma' sections as you stated, and you'll began to find the shoots. For someone new to the game, it can be a bit confussing as too what is shot at a Long range match, high power match, etc... I still always end up calling a match director ahead of time before I travel to a shot anywhere to make sure that F-Class shooters are welcome..

I live in Arkansas, and they recently held the Arkansas State High Power Championships...guess what....F-Class wasn't even encouraged..when I asked about shooting F-Class in the match, the responce was "well, we can probably find a spot for you, but there will be no awards or anything"...

I'd love to see F-Class contiinue its growth. We need to encourage the continued growth of any shooting sport, and make the matches easier to find will only help. I agreed that thur educating oneself about ones sport is an important step here, but why can we go to the NRA website for example, and find a shoot listed as "F-Class"????? instead of High Power or Service Rifle or Cross the course match?? I believe the anwser is the fact that F-Class is such a new sport, but we must remember that it's also one of the fastest growing. We need to make it (as well as High Power, Services Rifle, etc) easy to find a place for someone to give it a try...

I agree with falconpilot 100%. I am one of those guys thats scratching my head. I hear that f-class is the fastest growing sport but yet i cant find any info as to were i can go shoot. I need to talk with someone that shoots in St Louis so i can get some info. I have tried to contact the number on the web site butt nothing. I have asked the question here about St Louis and no one will reply. I want to play this sport, but i really dont know when or where. Thanks Falconpilot!!!!! You are mistaken. In most places, there aren't enough F-Class shooters to hold such a match, growth or no growth. For example, at one Washington State Long Range Regional, we had ~6 F-Class shooters. This despite the match being well publicized as an F-Class regional event. And if you think the Northwest US is F-Class unfriendly, think again - many of the experienced shooters here knew "Farky", and agree with the concept. Few of them support holding seperate matches, mostly because of the low number of shooters that would attend.

As for the "fastest growing segment" consider this: Numbers grow very quickly when you start from nearly zero. Case in point: A few years ago, I heard the statistic that based on rate of growth, ~half of the US would be an Elvis impersonator by now. Don't see too many Elvis do's or rhinestone jackets around here. Blue/green/orange hair and pierced eyelids/tongues/noses - that's another story. :D

It's very disappointing about Arkansas, hopefully, the match directors there will see the light.

Now, for an interesting turn of events, did you realize that an F-Class match CAN'T turn away a shooter using shooting jacket, sling and iron sights? Read the rules - it's true.

As far as I'm concerned, NO shooter should ever be turned away from any event. We need to all support one another, whether we shoot F-Class, sling, or service...:)

I am thinking about see what it would take to have a 500 yard f-class type shoot at the effingham illinois gun club. The range there is very nice and is 500 yard capable. we can do a formal type f-class match or an informal f-class match. I would really like to have a long range shoot in this area If you think you would be interested in something like this please let me know.
