Update
Ok, I here's the scoop.
I put a Krieger 12 twist lv contour bbl on Mikes Savage with a reamer I got from PTG no turn neck, .040 freebore. I opened the stock up with a 1.250 end mill and bolted it back together. No nut. The 20 TPI shallow thread was weird, but oh well? The notch on the recoil lug Savage does is a good idea I thought. I left .003" between the bolt and bbl face. It was my first savage, but I figured it works for a Mauser...so what to heck.
Mike shot four groups with it yesterday, battling cold weather and mirage from the bbl.
He put 20 rounds through that I loaded in lapua Brass. (I broke in the bbl and got it on paper, per krieger, but did not group it previous)
175 gr SMK's with .002 jump and 42 gr Varget. Shot 1/2" the first 5 shot group. The second, was 3/8" group.
With .003 jam, the next two groups were 3/8"
So, just changing the barrel went from 1"-1.5" groups to 3/8" groups.
And, I think the riflew will do better when Mike gets more comfortable with it, and the weather gets better. We'll stretch it out to 600.
He is very pleased with it.
