Air rifle question

I will apologize in advance here.

I thru the idea to my daughter about air cadets and some of the potential opportunities for here being involved in them. Aviation, gliding, flying, education etcetera as well as leadership.

I was an air cadet and QUIT :eek: long before I ever should have.

Anyways to keep a long story short, I am wondering what would be a reasonably priced starter Air rifle for shooting offhand and prone using peep sights? I am willing to purchase her a air rifle so she can practice on her own but I want it to be something fairly decent but not break the bank book.

If I did not have another Centerfire benchgun in the works I would go all out on a Annie or Feinwerkbau or Walther but those will have to wait for another day. It is also something that maybe I could have fun with as well. She is 12 years old and 5'4" so I would think it should be easy to fit her with something.

Any suggestions?

CMP has Daisy 853 or 953 air rifles

I think the price is about $230. Very accurate. Very quiet. Trigger needs some tweaking, but a very fine air rifle in .177 and you may find it so nice, you want to shoot too, so go buy two.

there are various used units Anz., FWB, RWS, Walther, & Styer that appear for sale on the "Target Talk" forum, or the Yellow Forum. I am not particularly fond of the daisy units. FWB 300, RWS 75 ANZ 380 for some model numbers that while about double the daisy ( these are used units) are a quantum leap above them. the 300 and the 75 are spring piston, no recoil, the 380 is pneumatic single stroke like the daisies. top of the line trigger better barrels and ergonomics. I had gotten one of the daisy units for my boy at your daughters age and he had a real struggle trying to pump it, He had no problem with my RWS 75. These are match grade units as used in the Olympics some 30 plus years back and they hold their value. Ten years from now you could sell it for what you shelled out. They still hold there own against the new crop in the local matches.

Blades,

those are older used rifles.

What would be something that would be comparable today in the NEW marketplace?

First off I do not know what program CAP is running now days if that is what you are aiming at. If it is like the 4h or a couple others for that age group they start off with the daisy units typically because Daisy has a junior program that provides substantial savings on equipment. Excluding Crossmann and Daisy all the new units are some form of pre-pressurized system. The bulk being compressed air at apx 2900 lbs/in or 200 bar, either requiring you to pump it up with a separate hand pump (old tire pump on mega steroids) or use a scuba tank as the supply to the guns tank. The two least expensive units in this class are the Air Arms S200 or the Air Fore Edge ( the edge unit was designed with a bunch of input from NRA/ ISSU people) it has a very nice ergonomically adjustable space gun style stock. Cost, The edge has a list price of $599 with good sights. The Air arms is priced the same but is a conventional wood stock not adjustable. Tank or pump is going to add $200-250 to this. Next class is the MPR styles about 900, Then we jump into the Styer FWB ANZ Walther starting at 1500 or so.
Back to Daisy, Crossman: as mentioned by another. Daisy Avanti start at $279 ( note most youngsters in the 10 -12 age bracket have trouble with the compression stroke) Last the Crossman Challenger $579 with sights well thought out unit not as racy looking as the Edge but the ergonomics are there, dual fuel unit ( air or co2) again a charging tank or co2 has to be purchased, this unit is more along the lines of the Edge and S200.

Thanks Blades

That is more of what I am looking at.

The Cadet program from what I hear is using Daisy 853 rifles.

I want something slightly better and a little more adjustable for fit. The 2 you have mentioned seem to fit quite well. Springer or PCP does not matter. I can always find a tank for filling.

I know my daughter should probably shoot a similar rifle for familiarity but I feel better is in order for her.

Thanks again.

Now to find a place to pick one up.....
