Action wrench

Is there a special action wrench required to exchange a barrel on a Rem 788? I want to change the barrel on mine and wondered what I might need. All of the wrenches I have are for the Remington 700 type actions. Thanks, Pete

788 Action wrench

Pete,
A gentelman by the name of Cliff LaBounty makes a wrench that will work on most actions.I have one that I will part with if you want it since I only play with 700 actions and have a wrench made just for it.

I realize it's been a year or two since you posted this but I thought I'd take the chance that you might still have the wrench and be interested in parting with it.

Please Advise ! It it's still available please state your asking price.

The best thing to do on a 788 is to take a parting cut in front of the recoil lug down to minor thread diameter and then use an around the receiver action wrench to remove the barrel. They put the factory barrels on very tight as well as using some kind of loctite on them. After the barrel is replaced then it’s no harder to change barrels than any other action.

I used the parting tool method on a number of factory Remingtom barrels. I don't have a vise or action tool suitable on the factory threads. However I don't think there is any type of thread locker on them as once the shoulder pressure is relieved the barrels easily screw off by hand for me.
