6x47 lapua load questions

Well I just updated my long range gun with a shilen ratchet twist 8 twist barrel. I had the barrel chambered in 6x47 lapua, and its length is 28 in. The barrel is a #7 contour, and dang I am close on weight. ( right on the edge of 17 lbs)

What loads are you guys using? No one has data out yet, and thought about going off of 6mm international data. The brass I am using is Lapua. I have a ton of sierra 107 mk, and 95 gr mks. On powder I have a few lbs of imr 4350, I also have varget, 4895, bechmark, h332, h380, etc. What primers do you guys prefer, I was told that the cci 450 mag primer was the best for this case, I also have rem 7 1/2's and cci br4's.

So what are your guys thoughts, on the rig, what bullets, powder, primers do you like, and last what data do you have. Thank you for the help.

I also thought about trying some light bullets, like 68 gr council, or fowlers, what data do you have for them?

Thanks for the site, but all load data is with 107 match king, or 105 berger, nothing lighter like 95 gr, or even lighter like 68. All powder is h4350 or n160 listed, looking for a more vast data base.

Good call Gary.

Also read this article on Don Neilsen over on 6mmbr.com http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek079.html read it all.

I shoot 40gr H4350 which pushes Euber 108's to 3100 in my current Shilen (non-ratchet) 28" barrel. I can run these up to 3200 but understand that this is HOT!!! Custom FL dies, small firing pin ONLY.

For standard dies or neck-size only I'd stay down around 36-38gr depending on your barrel/chamber

VARget is not a good match for the 105-108gr bullets It MIGHT work ok for the 95's but my hunch is that it's still too fast. 380 didn't work for me and I've never tried the others. General concensus favors the 4350 for the heavy bullets.

This may get you going.

I have tried a couple of different twist rates on my 6X47L. I started off with a Krieger 1:8 .236 and I found H4350 was terrible IMR was no better. I couldn't get anything to group... Bergers, Hornady, Lapua 105's, Sierra 107's or Berger 108's. I went from 60 thou jump to hard jam with all of them in various ladder tests

Varget was too hot a powder, but the epiphany came when I discovered N560! Those groups sucked down do consistent .2's with Bergers poked 10 thou past first land contact. I ultimately used 39 grains of N560 with Berger 105 VLD's and CCI 450's with great success, while it lasted. I must have shot close to 800 rounds trying to find something that worked (no kidding). I was ready to re-chamber in 6BR when I found N560. The gun shot like a house of fire until 1600 rounds when it started telling me it was done.

I have since re-barreled with a 1:7 twist for 115's (The 115 Bergers Key-holed in a 1:8) and I can still throw 105's with incredible accuracy.

4350 detonates like a musket in the 6X47. N560 has come through for me again and I am still refining a 115 grain load, but 36 grains of N560 is shooting 115's at 2900. Lots of room to play with yet and I will ladder test again today. Groups are promising.

In People's Republik of Kanada, ve haff no RL-17, so I wait with baited breath for some of that to try

Apoplectic, which barrel keyholed?

Reference this line:

"I have since re-barreled with a 1:7 twist for 115's (The 115 Bergers Key-holed in a 1:8) and I can still throw 105's with incredible accuracy."

Was this the Krieger you initially had problems with? How many rounds had you fired before you tested the 115s and finally what was the freebore diameter of that barrel?

Thank you for your time.

Bat model M, 28 inch 1-8 Krieger

Berger 105 VLD Moly
40.5 Reloader 19
Federal 205M
3100 FPS
I could not get the 4350's too work with this either.

Sierra 85 Grn Varminter Moly
42 IMR 4350
CCI SRM
3300 FPS
This came alive with the IMR 4350. Didn't group well with H4350 or RL19. Go figure. Voodoo sometimes.

Both are sub inch groups at 300 yards. The first frequently will have the holes touching.

Back off the loads if you don't moly. Back off in any case and work up.

Both are jammed.

I will have to try some N560.

Seem to be safe in my gun. Be careful and back off the grs and work up.

I also have a 1-12 twist 6X47 that I shoot Sierra 70 gr Blitzkings out of. I use a CCI SRM primer and RL15 for those. I can break 3800 fps with good accuracy. I also tried Varget, but got pressure signs at less speed.
