Krieger has a break in procedure on their website.

Clean after every shot for 5 shots, then after every 5 shots for 5 more cleanings.

30 rounds for break in.

Ron,

In my opinion, life's too short to waste a moment of it breaking in barrels. Barrel break in is a myth that persists even to this day. It wastes time, components, and often results in damage to good barrels from improper cleaning techniques.

Breakin

Clean thoroughly before shooting the first round. Fire about 20 rounds. Clean again. Fire about 20 or 60 rounds. Clean again.......

I couldn't agree with Gene more. that 6.5X284 is going to be good for maybe 1200 rounds if you're lucky. Why waste valuable life - and some of the barrels very best accurate life - on a procedure that is based on lore, intuition and anecdote? Shoot it, clean it when you're done.

I put the challenge out there: Someone show me a proper multi-center controlled study that quantifies the barrel break-in benefits and I will start. Until then anecdotes don't cut it.

6.5-284

my son- in law has 637 rounds through it now. lots of matches in jan and feb in az. i told him he should have already ordered a barrel . 16 weeks from krieger

I tend to agree with you, and my engineering background does, too. That said, shouldn't we lend SOME credence to the manufacturer's recommendations? After all, we try to follow those recommendations when we service our automobiles, don't we? Not flaming or looking for flames, here; this is an honest question asked of people for whom I have great respect.

Now I don't feel so bad when I cheat on the procedure....like shoot 1, clean, shoot another clean, shoot 20 clean.......shoot 50.

When I go to the range the first time and if I have time I will maybe shoot the first one or two individually and clean it. I look to see what the barrel is telling me. If it is cleaning easy and little to know fouling I just sit down and shoot the gun.

Frank,
Your thoughts mirror mine. Let the barrel tell you. I believe that if we carefully burnished the reamer marks from the throat like the rimfire smiths, most of the so called break in would be unnecessary.

Ron: that throate changes so quickly that you needent worry about break-in
and at 600 plus rounds it resembles a dried up pond.
