50 yard test target feedback

Here is some feedback on our new idea for a fun and hopefully more easy way to play a 50 yard game.

But first let me make my opinion clear, that I'm not in favor of using any other target for the USA 50 yard game, other than the same 25 meter target we use now. I like the idea of comparing our open class rigs to the rim fire shooters and our scores at 25 meters. I know the rim fire guys use a slightly larger, but similar target to the 25 meter one.. and that might be OK too. But then the clubs would have to stock both targets, and some clubs could get mixed up and shoot the smaller one.. so why not just all of us use the 25 meter target we all have on hand now.

So, I've shot about 15 of these new targets now. I usually shoot them about twice as fast as the 25 meter targets, cause LD and I were thinking that would be a way to get more shooting in a given day... so I shoot two cards in 30 min. That's what I did at our last Western states match, although, everyone was allowed a full 30 mins per card as usual. The idea is for a side shoot game we can play and get more shooting done in a day.

This is a hard target. Cleanly staying inside a 1/2" dot for 2 points on 25 bulls at 50 yards outdoors, is tough... damn tough:).. LD's math says it's like shooting all tens on the 25 meter target, and I think that is about right. My best targets so far are a 34/50 with 10 inside, and 35/50 with 12 inside the bull. Touching the ring for one point is much easier, and it kills me to just barely break the outside of the bull and have to count it a one. I shot those two targets in 20 min. this morning when the wind was pretty calm, but switching back and forth, like it often does here in Ashland. My average cards would be more like 27/50 with 6 in totally in the black.

I do think it's easier to score quickly, it has to be, there is only one ring that needs to be plugged on a close shot, instead of six!

My only problem with this particular target, is that it's hard to see, sometimes, if you have a shot in the bull already, especially if the target is backed, and the hole just doesn't show well. LD has a possible solution, a small 10ring size white dot in the middle.. we haven't tried that yet, but I think it will help.

I've found that changing the color of the bulls to red or green can help see pellet holes better. It can also make scoring easier since the trace of lead is easier to see against red or green. If you would like me to change the color for you just send me a digital file.

Good idea Dan,

I have shot green colored targets, care of Bob Z., and they work fine. I dunno if it costs more to print em in colors or not tho. I think we will TRY to stick to our evaluation plan though, and do one thing at a time, because in the past, I fond things need to get redone if too many changes are made at once I sent Wayne the new digital file with central white dots a week ago, and when we get to test some of those both way up north and way down South here, we will know more about whats working and if we need to make more changes.

Thanks for that feedback Dan, we'll give that a try too.

Kevin, the targets are 11 x17, just like the 25 meter targets. I do think they let one get more games done in a given day... for some reason I really like to shoot them faster, and so get more wind feedback into my small brain:)

Kevin,

The targets are printed on the same size paper as the International target, with identical boxes and numbering system, but the aiming bulls differ, in that they are simplified. Currently, we are in the testing phase, and have evaluated a half inch black dot. Since some shooters felt it too difficult to determine if a shot had already been made into a dot, and was "hiding" in it, a central white dot of around 1/8" or so has been added to the digital file, and the new design targets are being made up for evaluation. We will score any hit breaking into the black dot one point, and any hit breaking into the white dot a 2, while a shot that doesn't cut into the bull at all is a zero.

Though the target was intended for fifty yard shooting, its now clear it could easily be used as a very challenging 25 meter or 25 yard one as well.

addendum:

Wayne now has some of the latest printed up, and, unfortunately, the dots are nearly twice the size I had intended, with would make them not so useful for the shorter ranges, though we can still learn from them for the fifty yard shooting. It does seem the black is ok though, so we'll hold off on colors.
