Thanks for the help everybody and please excuse my long delay on following up on this thread.
I couldn’t shake my tuner curiosity so I’ve speen the last few months collecting parts and putting together a 10.5 pound / unlimited that I could do some tuner testing with.
I obviously have a long ways to go and a lot more (finer) testing to do before I jump to any big conclusions but I sure like what I’m seeing so far. Unless my limited testing was completely flawed, I see accuracy nodes, just like a centerfire! Searching for the widest and most accurate nodes at 50 & 100 next spring when the weather warms up should be fun.
There’s no such thing as good conditions this time of the year in Iowa, but the rifle was far enough along and the weather tolerable enough that I did a little testing over thanksgiving.
The rifle’s a 17.5 twist Suhl 150-1 I picked up at a gunshow, un-inletted Bruno McMillan stock, Stith trigger guard, T-36 scope. I’ll paint the stock if weight allows (I hope weight allows lol).
The first day’s 100-yard testing was first without the tuner, then adding the tuner and trying a few RvA weight combinations. 4.5oz was the result of doing the bong(sp?) test, and I added the remaining weights from there to see what would happen. The tuner was left at 250 for these tests.
The high velocity 1st shot impact points were a bit of a suprise, even without the tuner installed?
The second day was with 4.5oz installed and adjusting the tuner one full turn at a time. When the wind picked up too much for meaningfull 100-yard testing I setup a USBR target at 50 yards and tried the -2 turn setting on it. Yes, it took me a few rows to get a partial grip on the nasty conditions, but overall I’m happy with the rifles potential with only one type of ammo tested so far.
Slide-show of the project so far.
