I just read the Waldog post and the statement that 4198 was very temp. sensitive and was wondering if this is also true when using it in the .222 remington. thankyou for any information.

I've used IMR 4198 with .222 Rem for 50 years in all seasons....never a problem. The same with H4198. I've tried others but always came back to 4198. As of late I've been shooting 223 Rem also with 4198 with good results.

Thankyou for replying. the reason i asked is that i have a sako vixen that shoots some very tiny groups some days and others leaves me wondering. 4198 seems to be its favorite powder.
1974 Sako vixen in original barrel was very powder/load sensitive
I own a post 1973 HB vixen purchased in 1974 which would only shoot RL-7 with either sierra 52 or 53 Mkgs or 40 bergers (later years) under 1/2 moa. I mention the year because Garcia bought out Sako then and I believe changed the Barrel steel. I have since had the action trued and a Shilen select match barrel installed in .223 wylde chamber. The best loads in the original .222 was with lapua brass, Rem 7.5 primers and 19.6 grs RL-7 under the match kings or 20.9 grs of RL-7 under the 40gr bergers. These mentioned loads also shoot sub 1/2 MOA in my brothers Rem 700 BDL sporter barrel in .222.
I could never get either of the 4198's to shoot sub MOA groups consistently.

Richie i will try re7 in this vixen. its an older one, bofers steel and more than six lands. looks like micro-groove rifling.thanks

Try the extreme H 4198 powder . The loads should not be effected by temperature that much.
You can use more of the H due to grain size .
you can work it up farther if you like

For what it's worth, I've been loading IMR4198 in my 6mm PPC based on Berger Bullets new loading manual. Love it! Groups good, soft shooting, and you use less powder as compared to VV133 and Accurates LT32. I only shoot 100 yds and that might make a difference. I use the Berger 64gr. Column bullet with all three of these powders, but I like 4198 the best.
