30 ppc? thread hijacked

Mark,

When the time comes you should consider recyling your barrel. We do it all the time. You can change it over to the PPC at that time.

We usually rechamber our barrels several times. The process is to bore scope first and then hand lap the barrel and then rechamber and touch up the muzzle. How far we move it forward depends on how the bore looks with the bore scope. I have two rechambered barrels than now are shooting better than they did when they were new.

We have a fully equipt shop so we do all of our own barrel work which makes it easy.

For those not blessed with the equipment and skill, it's not so compelling to rechamber to extend a barrel's life...unless it's a super barrel.

As for the 6BR, no, in the end, you will leave too much agging capability on the table to go heads up with any of these. A little too much case capacity is the culprit.

I assume somebody has tried this, so I'll save myself some thinking and just ask... What happens when you shorten a 6BR until the case capacity is closer to that of the 6PPC? Or does the brass get too thick to make that practical? I would think it'd still be at a disadvantage to the PPC due to its larger diameter, but I'm curious.

To Jackie and others who say 6BR case too large...

I'm not disputing this, I'm trying to learn. I shoot both 6BR and 6PPC.

Is it capacity or is it capacity to bore diameter ratio?
Or is it capacity to powder weight ratio?
Or is it capacity to bullet weight ratio that is too large?
Or is it some other capacity ratio?

It doesn't make sense to me that that the PPC case size is right at that precise volume that adding just a little more volume will make it "too large". If it's a matter of one of the "ratios" being off, would making the ratios equal make the two cartridges perform the same?

I read somewhere.
P &/ P. One of these guys said it might be the smaller flash hole and small rifle primer. Just something I read.
I stopped reaming my flash holes.
Went to a Jack Neary seminar. Next thing I know. I got me a trophy. :)

Just Curious, but just what does the various "flash hole reamers" increase the size to. I have always just used a .0625 drill, and it will typically go into at least 1/3 of the flashholes in a box of 100 without removing any metal at all.

Since the discussion is about the capabilities of the 6BR, it shares the same flash hole dimension with the 6PPC that is derived from the Lapua 220 Russian..........jackie
