.270 accuracy update

Thanks again to all who posted with information/suggestions earlier. Was finally able to work up some new loads.

Pre-fired Win brass
Sierra Match King 135s
51grns of H4831
CCI 250 lr primers
3.370 overall length

The COL is longer than list because my test rounds weren't showing land marks until 3.94 so this was a bit of a compromise.

Loaded 12 rounds for 4 three shot groups. All were close but best group measured 0.838 outside edge to outside edge. Subtracting 0.277 gives 0.561 center to center.

Assuming we stay with this powder and bullets, where do we go from here? Will a higher powder charge be more accurate? Experiment with seating depths? Any suggestions welcome, Matt.

Matt, just remember the MKs..............

aren't hunting bullets(if that's what you're going to do). As for going up, work carefully, measure the web, etc. You'll usually have accuracy fall off a bit after your best group. Good Luck, be careful, and, above all, HAVE FUN. ;)

Good point, I should have brought that up.

Its the off season here so this is purely an exercise in accuracy. I have a hunting load worked up.

This is mostly a learning experience for me to see what kind of accuracy I can squeeze out of this rifle/these rounds.

0.5 is the goal, everything else is an education.

Here's a thought....

130gr Nosler Ballistic tips fly just about exactly like 130gr Barnes TTSX's and you can get them up to over 3000fps.........And Noslers will group with anything on the planet. Good balanced bullet.

Practice with the Noslers and go knock 'em over wit' da' Barnes! :)

Cool thing is, you can probably use the same setting between the two bullets, including seat depth!

At 51gr of H-4831, you load seems extremely low. I would start increasing power by 0.5gr a see what you get. Case capacity or load density is very important. With 130s I shoot 57gr in mine with great results.:D

Thanks for the replies. 51grns is pretty low but it was the min load listed so I thought it was a good place to start. Will deffinetely try the .5 increases.

Your load is way too light.......

I'm loading 60.0g of H4831 with a Win primer with a 130g Nosler, getting 1/2" groups out of a Ruger(work up to this load).

58.0g of R#22 with a Fed 210 shoots groups in the high 3's with my rifle, classic load for a 270.

...Funny you ask about wanting a good load...Then don't even follow it...At 51grs of H4831 you mat as well switch to a .243..

270 Win

I too am shooting 60.grains of H4831 with 130 Sciroccos.

less than .5 group (5 shots) at 100 yds.

.270 accuracy

Love my .270 Sendero with a Hart barrel. The best load that I came up with,
and I tried a lot of different combinations. 60 G of H- 4831 short cut in Winchester brass, CCI 250 mag primer, Sierra 130 Pro Hunter seated .005 off of the lands. This pushes a shade over 3000 FPS. I use a NECO gauge to sort the brass and cull the ones that are > .002 out of round" Banana Cases"
Best 3 shot group was a .406 at 200 meters, avarage groups are < 1" at 200 if I do my part and the conditions are good. This is with a 4 X 12 Leupold off of a bench. Work up slowly and try 5 rounds each at .3 grain increments until you hit the node that would be the most accurate for your rifle. Every rifle is different so what works for one may not work for another. The gun will tell you what it likes.

Thanks for the information, I've been looking at the sc, glad someone's putting it to good use.

And Sav-1, I appreciate everyones input. There are loads I haven't tried yet, not because I won't, just haven't gotten that far.

130gr Nosler Ballistic Tips and R22.

Lee data shows 60gr max for R22, Alliant data shows 58gr. I am running 58gr.

I've shot the Nosler's through several cartridges and has always been a very accurate hunting bullet.

All my hard work in prepping Winchester once-fired brass did not help as some factory primed Remington shot as well, with just the necks cleaned up.

Thanks for the tips on bullets and brass. Someone posted earlier about going with heavier bullets as well, need to check that out.

I load Sierra's 130gr. BTSP with 55.7 H4831sc and CCI200 with Rem cases and get 5 shot groups just about the size on a nickle at 100 yds out of my Rem 700 rifle...Has done this a few times some groups of course are larger, but still under the size of a quarter... Hope this helps:)

tsx in 270

I have used the following loads with good succes in my .270
both 1/2 inch from a standard Mauser M03.

Barnes TSX 140 with H4350 54 gn
Barnes TSX 150 with VV-N560 54,5 gn

Thanks for the load data. Just picked some IMR4350 for the .243, do you think this would work well instead of the H4350 you were using?

I have an 270 ultra light Pac nor barrel on a pre-64 M70 and rimrock stock.
This rifle only weighs 8.9 pounds with scope, bi-pod, and sling.

I am shooting 130 gr ballistic tips with 50 gr IMR4895 is an anemic load of only 2885 fps.

But it shoots a 5" group at 500 yards.

Zero'd for 200 yards, If I aim at the front 1/3 of the deer with the scope elevation at 8moa, the deer at 500 yards go bang flop, or run 50 feet.

I buy and build more rifles with new cartridges every year.
I buy new scopes.
I work up new loads.
But the old 270 with 130 gr Nosler Ballistic tips always seems to be what I carry into the field.

Still dancing around .5, 56grns of H4831 was just over .6 today with the 135 SMKs.

On a parrallel track 150 grn SSTs were grouping at about 6" at 500 yards with 55grns of
H4831
