A big thank you goes out to the 118 shooters that attended the 2017 Cactus Classic. While many parts of the country were getting snowed on, Phoenix, AZ was sunny and warm all week long for practice and during the match. We had some wind, but just enough to add some challenge and make it competitive.
During the week of practice we got to see lots of faces we have come to know over the years and catch up with old friends. We even got plenty of new faces out here for this year’s match, which was quite surprising considering that this was not a points match. One shooter even came all the way from New Zealand just to shoot the Cactus!
Friday night we had a banquet dinner and prize giveaway. While we enjoyed Lasagna, salad, and pasta, we had thousands of dollars in gifts from our sponsors that we gave away: everything from scopes to actions and annealing machines. Our sponsors really outdid themselves again this year.
Saturday the match kicked off with Light Varmint 100 yards. Ed Adams started off in the lead with a 0.108, then in the next match, Carolyn Libby showed him up with a 0.096, which is amazing when you consider she hasn’t been shooting much lately. Jack Snyder came in on top in match 3 with a 0.127. Scott Smallwood took small group for the gun and yardage with a 0.083 in Match 4, then Henry Pinkney took small group in Match 5 with a 0.112. In the end, Carolyn Libby took 3rd in the agg with a 0.1932, following behind Earl Horgeshimer’s 2nd place agg of 0.1906. Durward Wofford took 1st with a convincing lead of 0.1702.
Saturday afternoon’s Heavy Varmint 100 yard matches continued with sunny skies and a bit of wind. Kelly Ellis took the first Match’s small group with a 0.108 and Terry Hettich took small group for match 2 with a 0.119. Sam Langhofer took small group for the yardage in Match 3 with a 0.089, then Keith Cottrell took match 4 with a 0.121 and Pat Reagin took Match 5 with a 0.092. In the HV-100 agg, Dennis Thornbury took 3rd with a 0.1978, Pat Reagin took 2nd with a 0.1888 and Dave Tunbridge took 1st with a 0.1830.
Sunday was another beautiful day of shooting. We started the morning with Heavy Varmint 200 yards. Keith Cottrell took the lead in Match 1 with a 0.260, then Ed Adams took Match 2 with a 0.235. Bud Mundy got small group for the yardage in Match 3 with a 0.138, then in Match 4 Tony DeBacco, Arizona local and junior shooter, won small group with a 0.269. Match 5’s small group went to Jack Sutton with a 0.229. In the agg, Earl Horgeshimer took 3rd with 0.2011, Gary Ocock took 2nd with a 0.1932, and Bud Mundy ended up on top with a 0.1928.
In the afternoon we shot Light Varmint 200 yards. Joe Hargadine got small group in Match 1 with a 0.321, then in Match 2 Timothy Oltersdorf took small group for the yardage with a 0.150. Match 3 John Verhagen took the top spot with 0.242, then in Match 4 Jack Sutton took small group with a 0.204. In Match 5, Bob Brackney took small group with a 0.241. For the agg, Gene DeLoney came in 3rd with a 0.2372, following Darrel Loker’s 0.2353. Bob Brackney’s last small group put him on top of the agg with a 0.2344.
For the Light Varmint Grand Agg, Duke Rovarino took 3rd with a 0.2288, just behind Charles Huckeba’s 0.2262. Gene DeLoney had a good lead with his 1st place agg of 0.2180. In the Heavy Varmint Grand Agg, Ed Adams took 3rd with a 0.2106, Keith Cottrell took 2nd with a 0.2069, and Bud Mundy came in 1st with a 0.2017. The 2-Gun Agg ended with Charles Huckeba in 3rd with a 0.2363, Bud Mundy in 2nd with a 0.2248, and Ed Adams just ahead of Bud with a 0.2228!
