Here is some nice shooting with a just received CMP 40X. 50 yards with iron site, those buggers must be some shooters! A guy named Gerald at RFC is the owner and shooter. Does anyone have one for sale that shoots like this or do they all shoot this good? Jack Chastain

Jack, it depends on who took care of these rifles. from what I've seen the rotc and jroc are excellent. the ones that were commercial or the ones used in competition, those are recrowned, bedded and in some instances re-chambered and set back are a grade above. some it looks like weren't properly cared for. but the bulk of this release are way above average. from the 4 I've tested 2 with the addition of jewell triggers and tuners will do really well at local IR shoots.

40x

I use to shoot with this guy and yes he is good. I have my Remington 37 that I have, and shot 200-20X on same target at the same range this was shot at. Wish more would come and play

It is a great target. I would be even more impressed if it was shot from position, not the bench, but it is a nice target.

John i guess you didn't check the link, the guy is legally blind and his seeing eye dog actually does the shooting for him. Jack Chastain

that x ring on there is only .350, shooting with peep sights and globe for that rifle does not allow any room for error. to shoot that good of a score wether using a bench and rest it's not easy with even a slight breeze.

With a .350 X ring that target looks like .150 5 shot groups @ 50 yards with peep sites. Isn't that as good as or better than most bench guns with 36X +scopes? What gives? Jack Chastain

I think it's harder. lot easier to judge wind and distance, and hold off with a scope. try doing the same with a halo of light around a black target for depth, determing what light is bending around the insert. probably 10 times harder to shoot good scores with traditional peeps and inserts than with a target scope. just my opinion that peeps seperates the marksman from the equipment.$$$$$$ that accuracy can buy. Jack here's something else those scores and targets are being shot without tuners, 2oz triggers, bench stocks. and after shooting every round looking thru a spoting scope and then trying to translate what you saw thru the spotting scope back to peeps.

Well I've been called a dog and I've been called blind but seldom the two combined, Rem37 thanks for the kind words, haven't seen you at the club in a while. That morning the temperature was 36 when I left the house and 41 when I got home two hours later. There was not a breath of a breeze and the 4 bull is one of those groups that happen from time to time and leave me at least scratching my head 'cause I ain't that good. The rifle was shot off a Cowan rest with Protektor bags, the rifle is a CMP 40x I got this week, I took the rifle apart, wiped it down, put it back together. We've had several 200-20x targets recorded in our on-line matches this past year.

Not taking anything away but just pointing out

That is remarkable shooting with peep sights in my book. I hope that no one minds if I point out that the target is quite a bit larger than the 50/50 or the ARA that we usually shoot.

Bill, at bellwood sportsman there are 3 of us that shoot bench and 20times that shooting open sights. most of the guys under 30 shoot open sights. they have 4 nra sanctioned shoots thru out the year usually shooting 2 or 3 relays with the benches full. for a match director looking for new shooters adding a open sights might get more young guys into your clubs.

Bill i don't think anyone minds at all. I'm lost at what you mean. It is still 5 holes stacked on each other @ 50 yards. I can see the black bull is larger but how would that be an advantage to a guy with a 60x March? It almost seems as your saying if the benchresters were shooting this target they would have better groups. Maybe i'm out in left feild as usual but Sometimes i don't understand everything i am thinking. Jack Chastain

Jack,
You are correct. I showed the article to my dogs (all 4 of them) and they think they could do better. They have proposed a new sport. They want to call it Barkrest shooting. All done by dogs with single malt scotch and cigars afterwards.
I really did not try to slam the guys shooting. My statement was the first thing that popped into my head. You must forgive me as I shoot prone smallbore and highpower. If I had shot that target from position I would be happy as all get out.

Jack, Like I said, that is good shooting. I am sure there would be only a few who would disagree with me when I say the same shooter who shot this with iron sights could have shot even better if he had a target scope mounted on that rig.

At my old club we had a military trainer match using that same target, A23/5?, and 200 score was pretty common; 40X, 52D, etc.Best I ever shot was 199, lousy shot I guess. Thanks, Douglas

Reason for the larger black bullseye...

For those that haven't shot with aperture sights in a while, the smaller apertures, 2.0 or 2.2 depending on how much of a stock crawler you are, will leave just a slight ring of white around the black. That makes aiming a lot easier than otherwise. The larger bull would not be of any value to 50 yard shooting with a 36x scope.

I'm with you Douglas, 199 is the best I ever did on that target, still got it hanging over my reloading bench. That was prone with a sling. You would be suprised at how accurate you can be with iron sights. The bigger black is required to see with the appature sights. The ten ring on this target is a lot larger than that on the typical benchrest target. People are usually amazed when I tell them I use a 36X scope for shooting 50 yards but, use irons for 1,000 yards!:D

Ken

PS: I do NOT use rimfire for 1,000 yard shooting.:)

That guy

gives you a hint as to his age.. look at his log-in name... NOW what about that target? To me, he's just a kid... {8>)
