I'm looking at a Jet BD1340R Lathe that is for sale. The year 1991 is stamped on it. Does anyone know where this lathe would have been made? I was told they were made in Taiwan until a certain year and the best ones were made there. I guess they moved production to china at some point. This lathe seems to be in very good shape. They guy wants $1500.00 for it but says he will entertain a reasonable offer. Does this seem like a decent deal?

There are alot more issues here than where the lathe was made. Not too many can be resolved based upon your photo. In this town (Cincinnati) that's probably a $500 lathe./// Is it local? Will he load it? How much tooling? Belt drive? that looks like the cheaper model. I'm not against a Jet. My best lathe is a 1440D model Jet (Colchester Clone). But, they retail today at over $10,000. The lathe in your picture looks like one of those $2,500 ones new.

It is a belt drive. If I'm not mistaken, thats what the BD in the model #BD1340r stands for. It has 3 chucks and a quickchange tool system but thats about all

Does he have the owner's manual? Maybe that will say where the lathe was made. My Supermax milling machine has a nice big brass plate with the US importer's and the Taiwanese factory's name, address and phone number. Also has the date of manufacture, 1982.

If there is no place on the machine with the country of origin I would be inclined to think that it is Chinese.

Jet seems to have a good reputation but it may be a hold over from the old days.

Hard call to make on the value.

Good luck

I have a 12X36BD and I wouldn't sell it for $2000............

It is a GREAT gunsmith lathe...................If the condition is good, I'd pay that much for it.

They make a lathe very similar to that today. It's the BDB 1340A. The 1340 belt drive lathes are good gunsmithing lathes that sell new for around $4,000.00 +/-.

If the one you are looking at is in good condition, little wear on the ways, has good spindle bearings, the chucks and face plate are there, the various feeds and speeds all work, the thread dial and the metric change gear are still with it, it's probably worth between $1,000 and $1,500.

Brian,
If you can get the serial number, you can contact Jet parts dept.
They can tell you the country it was made in,the manufacturers' name and if parts are still available.
Jet no longer stocks parts on some of the older machines.
They will give you another contact that may have parts.
Sorry I don't have the phone numbers in front of me.
Jeff
