18 or 17 in a 30 br

We have had several 30’s around here, and also have a weekly winter BR league, the 18’s shine in the warm weather but if you shoot in winter, they usually do not work with the best bullets once you drop into the 30’s

twist Krieger (cut rifled) and concur with the comment above about its performance in cold weather. A 17 twist is, IMO, the best all-around choice.

You will likely be quite pleased with the 18" twist."
 
I shoot 1:18" Kriegers with a 114 gr 7-ogive on 0.925's. Some of my best scores have been in really cold weather (we shoot 2 Winter League matches a month in Virginia). Not sure I'm buying the notion that 18 twist 30's give up anything in cold air.

And yet, while at the IBS Score Nationals at Randy Robinet’s Webster City Iowa range, it was pointed out to me that my holes weren’t round and switching from an 18 twist to 17 twist barrel would solve that problem. I won a couple barrels there and ordered 17 twists. I was and am I still shooting BIB 118 grain bullets at 2980 fps. It was Ron Berg who pointed out the shaded, out of round holes. I thank him for that.

you guys don't get "cold" weather. Merry Christmas. Common back to the Firecracker in 2022. --Greg
 
Very true Greg. We don't get cold like you all have up Maine. But we do sometimes shoot Winter League in 20's and 30's.

I'll definitely be up for the Firecracker next spring. Wayne and I were talking just the other day about booking our rooms.

Come up to NY. I’ll show you 18’s that group in the .1’s in warm weather, going through the paper sideways when it gets cold, I’m not talking Virginia” gotta wear a sweater” cold, I’m talking cold….as in 10-15 degrees.:p
 
I believe you Tim. All I can say is I've shot .30's in teen temperatures and have never seen yaw in the paper (we do occasionally get sub-20's in Northern VA). Maybe I just got lucky with my 1:18's.

I’m just funnin with you. I know it’s bullet/speed related but you must admit the 18’s are right on that hairy edge.

I've been through

quit a few 30 barrels over the years and while one of the best barrels I ever had was an 18 in a 308 Obermeyer, I pretty much settled on 17's a long time ago. I use to shoot 110gn bullets through it sometimes and it loved them. One of the very best barrels I had, actually two of the very best barrels I have had I sold to Francis with that lovely Blue Hunter Gun. Two hummers, for sure. I don't remember the twist of them but one was a Hart and the other a PacNor.

I bought an HBR rifle off BRC two or three years ago and it came wit a 1-18 and a 1-19.5! I didn't like the rifle so sold it to a friend who has been shooting the 1-18 and it has shot very well.

I still prefer the 17 and can't give a good answer as to why, just old and stuck in my ways I guess.
