I just got an old Sako L461 chambered in 17-222. The dies are stamped 69 so I think it has been around quite a while. Would anybody have any experience with this? I would appreciate some starting load data if you have any.

I found a great forum to ask this sort of question.
There is a lot of knowledge there even on the older rifles.

You won't find much at Hodgdon or anyplace else for that matter. The powder and bullet company's still
have their head in the sand. They still think we only have the 25gr bullets from 20 years ago.
Hodgdon does have some info for the 17 Remington. You can pretty much cut the powder charge by two
grain and use that Data.
If you are not an experienced reloader, have someone help you.
Start low and work up. That should make a fine round. The Sako may be a 10 twist forcing you to lighter bullets.
All 17 rifles coming out now are 9 TW. Find out what twist it is. Kenny

.17-222

I've got a custom made .17-222 that was built on a Mauser 98 action, Douglas 20" Varmint barrel 1:10 twist & Canjar double set trigger. I started working up loads after getting a new reloading bench set up. I had to buy a set of Case Forming Dies along with a set of Full Length Reloading Dies to reform the Norma .222 brass I'm using. I used to reform the .222 necks to .17 cal. with my old die set. All I can figure is they've changed the brass makeup since the '70s when I used to shoot & reload my .17-222. So I had to by 2 sets of RCBS custom dies to get started. I used to shoot Hornady 25 gr HPs and started with those this time. I loaded the min. load of 16.2 gr of H4198 w/ 25 gr. HP and got real good groups, .459 - 10 shots is the best with a new Vortex Viper FFP 6-24x scope and a Boyd Laminated Thumbhole stock I haven't glass bedded yet. I've started trying some other bullets & loads, Hornady 20 & 25 gr V-Max and Nosler 20 gr Varmageddon. So far the Nosler 20 gr Varmageddon is shooting good groups with various powders. The Hornady V-Max's aren't even coming close to shooting. Every load I've tried with the 20 & 25 gr bullets is key holing.

I have a Sako-H&R L-461 also...

This is data for the Hornady 25gr hp
Hornady handbook Vol.2

4198 14.9 to 16.9gr

3031 16.2 to 18.3gr

4320 18.3 to 22.2gr

760 22.4 to 25.6gr

N204 22.7 to 24.2gr

.17-222 load work-up

I used H4198 and got some very good groups when I started back reloading my .17-222. My old reloading manual with my data got lost over the years. Late last summer I decided to try IMR 8208 XBR in it with 20 & 25 gr HPs & tipped Varmadeggon bullets. The only published data for a .17 cal. using 8208 was for the .17 Rem & .17 Fireball so I based my loads between those two. So far I'm very impressed with the results. When the weather gets better I'm going to do somemore testing but use the Chrono on the loads. I was getting some very small groups with my initial loads.
