Ok a quistion for experienced benchrest smiths.
I have a barrel I chambered with good results 28.1875" long now I want to shorten it to 25.875".
I dial in the throat and muzzle for my two points then drill and bore then chamber.
Dialed it in at throat and intended muzzle then checked base of...
One of the reassons I thought of this indexing idea was the way Gordy Gritters chambers a barrel. Have any of you that chamber barrels dialing in the throat and muzzle try his method and change your method because of better results?
Apologies Lee. I watched The first video in the shop and couldn't listen.
nice job on barrel indicating. The first barrel in question, have you dialed in the throat and the muzzle and then checked chamber? Maybe that barrel was dialed in different. And have you tested first barrel ?
Shoulder, chamber, thread, freebore, throat all dead true or to .0001-.0002, washer .0001 flat and parallel, action .0000-.0001 perpendicular. adds up.
Could you just lose 1 thread in action face? A thread releaf there.
I use the mag base travel dial indicators. and a 2"on my talestock.
I use whatever speed feels good from 100 rpm to 260 rpm I dont usually go that fast up to a shoulder except fine treads like a 32 maybe a 24.
I agree with Jackie.
I have looked for a good indicator that is calibrated for a long contact and couldn't find one. That makes me think his reading is worse by a mutiple of about four. Maybe I shouldn't mention that but it also tell me he doesn't understand what he is measuring ether.
I...
For my loading work I have a couple 8" mitutoyo's Im most comfortable with. I started using them 8" mitutoyo Bout 12 years ago and now my old six inch staretts feel to short now but they are nice and prety ridged. My 12" mitutoyo callipers stay at work and they are better.
Over the years I...
I can relate Jackie. I get ideas all the time some work some don't and some I talk myself out of. Getting feedback from others helps. You can see the use of this one for a six jaw chuck.
Then there is the method used to get those nominal results. I chamber thru the head stock because I can dial in a barrel within .0002 and I don't have a steadyrest yet for my machine. And I'm not sure I would use that method but I will try it when I can.
Before I got my lathe I wanted an action...
Through my time as a machinist I have learned setup is a large percent of a job to get closest to a nominal result in the part .now what adjustments would you make? Are you referring to something specific in relation to spindle bearings?
Thank you
Yes that is why I check my barrel alignment every time I complete any operation. I like to know where I am.
And thank you Jackie for all the info you have taken the time to teach others. My experience tells me it is sound info and the things I have read from you and many others...
I believe I can't correct my runout any more then I have if I can spin the spindle and get a .0001 movement one direction with a 360 spin and then a couple spins and get it in other direction.
With the three jaw adjustru buck chuck I use or a four jaw the best I think you could do is split the...
It occurs to me after I checked it out and found about .0006 axial movement and tightened it up to about.0004 (seemed pretty tight already) that I probably should have lossend it slitely and then tightened it. Still has just under .0002 movement on the spindle nose. So runout is acualy...
