One Off BR Chassis Build for a 7BR, and Bullets, and Rest.....

Adding to my creations, but needing more of a special testing platform for the 7BR
solids in the works. I like the MDT's to work on and started with the HS-3's when they
first came out. The Oryx took it's place when the HS-3 was dropped from their lineup.
I happened to have an early model orphan HS-3 in the vault and started making notes.
and changes from earlier works. lots of parts, and a few beers later, I was able to do a
formal mockup......Butt stocks used on the HS-3's used an AR-15 buffer tube so a person
could have a wide range of choices. My choice was to ditch it and replace it with a solid
spine I could mill. A piece of 6061 round stock, thread it, and epoxied in, did the job.
Another chunk of 6061 for the basic stock, then added a 2-1/8" wide bag rider to it.
Stock itself may get more work done to it but only after the rifle is near completion. That
will be a matter of weight and balance......Either way, this is what I have so far on this project,
with a weight at 7 lbs, 4 ounces

Another piece of the puzzle arrives and a month earlier then expected. Just waiting
on a reamer from Dave Kiff......In the meantime, I have a tuner to finish modifying for
this barrel. I just did a bullet inspection piece for Jimmymac, so the lathe is clear again.
Jimmey's part was simple. Probably show up in Al's bullet thread. It's all about solving
the little problems one beer at a time.....

Im a complete benchrest novice but I own an xp100 and a remington 40x in 7mmbr. Your work is fascinating to me because I've always thought the benchrest world would end up using the 7br in my lifetime.

Had a good undisturbed morning yesterday. Reamer is still a no show but does not
stop me from working on the muzzle end..... Barrel is a Lilja 6 groove. 14 twist, 1-1/4"
straight cylinder. Modifying a V2 tuner body to suit my needs for this project. Still
needs some internal work but close enough for fitment. I added an o-ring to the barrel
and may add a second. Front of the tuner body already has an o-ring so good there.
The 2 o-rings give good grip for adjusting but could use a bit more tension after lube
is applied. I normally use Mike Ezell's tuners but Mike does not have one for these
thicker barrels...... I cut the barrel to 24-1/2". Weighing up all the pieces, I should
be able to stay under 22 lbs using my March 10-60 High Master. If not, my NF Comp
goes on it, which actually I prefer.

Hmmm. Gary, A bunch of people are running my tuners on bbls all the way up to 1.450 straights. The standard model blends in pretty nicely on 1.250's. Tons of people are running them like that. Not sure what you're referring to by "thick" bbl. Lol! Neat project you have going! You're always thinking outside of the box.
Here's a pic on a 1.250

It'll work like that but behind vs in front of the muzzle is a bigger factor that one might think. If someone believes that tune happens at a "node", it wouldn't work at all because we can't physically move a node to the end of a cantilevered beam. But, since we tune to anti-nodes, it can absolutely work like that but with differences in how the group shapes form and predictability. The fact that they do still work either way kinda destroys the logic some people apply to tuners, though. Things like "wide spots due to "node width" for example. Can't really have node width if we tune to anti-nodes, right? At least not the way Calfee and some others explained nodes having width.

I have no issue with them done this way but it's not my suggested way to install my tuner is all. My instructions in regard to tuning with my tuners has a lot to do with reading the test target and this attachment method throws that out the window. Just understand that it changes how the bbl responds and that you'll need to figure those nuances out on your own with this different attachment method. But there's more than one way to do all of this and as long as you're happy, so am I! Thank you and I'm always happy to help wherever I can. Keep up the good work buddy!

Changed the header of this thread to include my designed bullets for this
project. These are all solid copper I'm having made by "Hammer Bullets".
I came up with two revisions to my original design and gave them a call two
days ago. Brian, the co-owner and programmer said I'll have 500 at my door
in a few days. It will be nice to test both at the same time.....Here are the first
RBT's I tested in my 7.2 Greedmore. Now they will all be tested in this specific
7BR.....Still waiting on the reamer ??

I had Hammer Bullets do two revisions on the above prototype, and 500 pieces
arrived yesterday. First was to have them create a hollow point to mimic an open
tip. I had them go in .200". Second was to have them shave off .015" off the RBT
base. Bullet is now .89" long at 89 grains. Still waiting on the reamer, and that's
the last piece of the puzzle to get me working on these, at the range.

Changed the thread header title again. Added a rest. While I'm still waiting on a
reamer, I was cleaning out the boxes from my move earlier in the year and came
across my orphan Bald Eagle aluminum slingshot base. I have an early model cast
iron one I set up for the grandson. The aluminum base is being re-envisioned, and
again, way outside the normal zip code.

This next piece goes with the madness ,of the above pic. I lengthened the hub post
by 3/4". I used a press fit then pinned it. I then milled a slot down the center. This
allows me to tighten the post in the front instead off of reaching around to the right
where the original lug is located. The idea of going longer on the post is to keep
most adjustment on this post and not the upper post where the mariner wheel was
located. No mariner wheel will be used. I'll be using Butch Lambert's Shade Tree top.
Need to put a longer key way key in place yet for the longer travel.......I have a plan
for the feet. Let's say, "Go big or go home"......

Feet are done except paint. Used some old 3/8-16 swivel machine levelers.
Front foot is 4-1/8" in diameter and the back two are 3-1/8". Rubber non
skid is glued down and trimmed. The way things are going, the rest base
should be completed in a day or two, then start on the top. 3" slick bag
from Protektor is on the shelf......

Other then very minor touch ups, it's ready for the range. Came in right at
10 lbs, with a small foot print of 9" x 9.5". I had added a joy stick extension
some time back for use on the cast iron model to help the reach with my
longer rifle stocks, and get my hand lower to the bench. You'll note, other
then the longer lower post, the post tensioner is now in front for easier rapid
access. Bag itself, until I can get Protektor a split L design, I'm just using 2 zip
ties to snug in the center. I need this drop clearance to clear my barrels. Front
foot is stationary with no adjustment. The back has ample adjustment to level
it all up.

Still waiting on my reamer......

Well after a long lead time, reamer came in Saturday and got a test cut done on a
barrel stub. Happy with Dave Kiff's work as normal. Sunday I cut the chamber and
did a casting. Again, pleased. So, back to life being good......Should be able to get
going on full assembly this afternoon......

Ran into a problem with the relationship of a severally lowered barrel to the height
of the butt stock. The difference between the two ends gives two much of a angle
difference when in the bags. This will actually be a blessing once I change up the
butt stock in the mill. Some of the problem is also caused by the 3/4" extra height
I had Protektor add to the new Flat Top DR bag. With all the dimensions skewed at
the rear, I can't raise the front rest high enough to get on the longer yardage berms.
Nothing major, just a bump in the road. In the mean time I took the cut off barrel
stub, and new reamer, and made a chamber guage. I'll re-cut and and adjust the
stock height this morning.

Well I busted it's first caps to get things settled and establish a base line. This
new developed solid did shoot in the high twos with N-130, non fire formed
brass and nothing cherry picked especially. Just put the bullet touching the
lands with an .003 interference fit. Started with 30 grs of 130 with my original
designed bullet at 92 grains. First 3 shots averaged 3036 fps......I will run a powder
work up this morning, weather permitting......Think throwing a 6ppc and a 30br in
a blender and see what spits out. Then there's that Savage thing ?? Note.....Still
using a PTA with my stock red blades. I elected to keep a nut in the works but with
my normal twist. The nut is actually fixed hard to the barrel then shouldered. Just
more for the conversation......First 100 yard target pics to come hopefully later today.
