I see in Europe they seldom but did try 30-30 in Benchrest competition. I am wondering if anyone ever tried 30-30 caliber in VFS with a 1:17 twist ?

A guy called Michael Turner did very well shooting a 30/30, he even made is own projectiles
Do a search on the Accurate Shooter website a lot of info about Michael there

i think it is proper to say it is BASED on a 30-30 case..but stops there. full blown br specs in actual use

You can find postings from Mike Turner on this site. He's the guy to talk to.

BTW, Michael Turner also makes his own actions and bullets.

Frank McKee won everything worth winning in IBS Hunter class with the 30 Aardvark, which is a 30-30 based case. Frank routinely put up scores that would win today. Dale Madiera (sp?) did the work on Frank's guns.

There's a lot more to making that case work in a BR level application than meets the eye.

From what I have read so far, written by Turner, is mostly in the sporter category, unless I misread. Since it is a rimmed case and supposed to be able to handle pressure as good as BRs, next project Will be to get my hand on a 1:17 custom barrel, get it chambered for 30-30 , fit it on a bolt action and try it at VFS 100 yards with bullets in the 110-120 grains. I have Faith it might be a good shooter . Competing buddies Will probably think there is something wrong with me 😆. Never know … Might work out good.

I'll see if Paul Jenkins is still with us. Back in the IMSHA days of killin' steel rams
at 200 meters, he shot a 30-30 bolt pistol using bullets made by Chism and Cheeks.
I bring this up because his pistol was capable of shooting 1/2" groups at 200 yards
using my Ransom pistol rest and loaning him a Weaver scope for the tests.

DONT....it ain that simple you will likely be very disappointed. Talk to mike first he bought a ton of 30-30 cases, selected the best, THEN went to work on them to make the useful..machined the face of the case head. neck turned of course. not sure what else..it might be in the history here,..but may have been lost. he lives in new mexico. i stopped by and saw him a couple years back

Are you going to spec the reamer to headspace on the rim, the shoulder....or both?

No experience on precision shooting vs 30-30, don't know. M. Robinnett wrote: GREAT CARTRIDGE!! Head-space ON rims: face rims for UNIFORM <0.0015", turn necks, and, "never look back"! For 30/30, "shoulder be damned" - no H.S. required.
never really worked on making rims thinner equally before. i am not much of a machinist.
the more it goes, the more I think it will more trouble than carrying on shooting my 30BR.

Roger this - lacking access to a lathe - and even with a lathe - you will not see an advantage, and in my world, turning neck-walls to uniform thickness would be a must. The beauty of H.S. on the rim is that there is no need to invlolve the shoulder. Some top Aardvark (40* shoulder) users (especially Frank McKee) head-spaced on both the rim and the shoulder - via the standard 30/30 slope, Michael Turner proved THAT un-necessary.
There is certainly nothing wrong with a 30BR. RG

If you're interested in more case capacity, both the 30BRX and the 30GT have a lot to offer. The GT based case woulg get you a true 30X44. You could also make the case for a 30 Dasher, now that Dasher brass is available.
