XP-100 action

Has anyone built a rifle on this action. I know the action screws could be an issue and the bolt handle will need some work but it seems to be a strong single shot action. I have had this action for a few years and haven't done anything with it but now I am thinking 6.5-284 or sell it. Any thoughts any would be welcome.
thanks,
Jim

It is a great action to build on.
It is the same basic action as the Rem. XR-100, the difference being the bolt handle and a rifle trigger.
I think you will have several offers to buy it.
Depending on how much you want to do to it, a custom action could be cheaper. However, for shooting varmint you could even live with the dog leg bolt handle.

kansasvet is correct. Sell it. The receiver is too short to take advantage of the 6.5X284. If you use that receiver go with a 260.

Benchrest action

The XP-100 makes a very good bench rest rifle action especially when sleeved. You may wish to keep it and find something else for the 284 wildcat.

This is one of the things in the shooting game that before custom actions made sense before the advent of custom actions. By the time you put the money in a sleeve and all the machine work, you will find this to be a loosing deal for a rifle, now for a single shot pistol, it's a different story.

No sleeved action from a factory action will command the money a good custom action will bring. Send the action and barrel out to have a good McMillan stock and a good barrel slapped on, work on the trigger and you have a great hunting/silhouette pistol. Or do like that other suggestions, peddle it and put your coins toward what you want.

Here's a sleeved XP 100 in 6PPC.

I`d go for it,,the 6.5-284 is a tad long but go with an after market bolt stop so an empty case will eject and yer good to go..It is a great action,,not as good as the customs but every bit as good as a 40x..My personal XP in pistol form,,and my best so far,, is 7 inch groups at 1000 yds.. but if you decide to sell you will get about half of what a custom will cost,,according to what ya buy,,and for what it cost to true the XP up then the custom looks a lot better,,plus the custom has better resale value....just my .002 worth..

Thanks for the input, I'm going to Tulsa next month weather permitting and with your input and what I may find there I will try to make up my mind.
thanks,
Jim

Sell the XP-100 and get a longer action for the 6.5 X .284

The XP-100 action should bring a premium because it is a pistol action. It is legal to make a rifle from a pistol but not a pistol from a rifle.

Swamprat61: Back in 1997 I began work on a full custom Rifle in caliber 6mm Remington Bench Rest. I had wasted 3 full years trying to find a Remington 40XB-BRKS in that caliber as they were VERY highly sought after back then.
I procured an XP-100 pistol in caliber 221 Remington Fireball and turned it over to a master Riflesmith and optical genius (he often posts on these boards!) to do the "work" for me!
The Rifle has a cryo treated 26 1/2" heavy Hart stainless barrel, a Jewell "Under-Lever Safety" type trigger and a McMillan Winchester Marksman style stock.
The Rifle/action now has a Sako extractor and uses Hart ring/bases to mount a Leupold 8.5x25 variable scope. The original bolt handle was replaced with an all steel 700 look-a-like bolt handle.
I had the Rifle's chamber cut to take advantage of the great little Nosler 55 grain Ballistic Tips but it prefers by just a "skosh" to shoot Euber 68's!
The genius Riflesmith that did the work for me suggested "we" by-pass the barrel recoil lug and instead he would make a 90 degree angle on the bottom of the receiver (which had formerly been a radiused or curved ledge) which would serve as the recoil lug.
Then the action was bedded in Black Marine-Tex.
This Rifle has shot extremely well since day one for me!
I only use it on "special" Varminting occassions - I want this Rifle to last me the rest of my life!
This clean lined Rifle not only shoots extremely well it looks wonderful also.
I say go for it!
And if your Riflesmith advises against the 6.5x284 cartridge in the XP-100 action then I HIGHLY recommend going with the 6mm Remington Bench Rest!
Yes, the XP-100 pistols and actions do sell for a LOT of money these days.
My friend Dan from Enumclaw, Washington just paid $700.00 for a minty XP-100 in caliber 221 Remington Fireball - it came with the original case and appeared to like new.
Its been so long since I personally have bought an XP-100 pistol for the basis of a Rifle that I am not to sure what to quote you for an action value.
Best of luck with whichever you decide to do!
