World Open temperatures?

Charles E

curmudgeon
I was thinking of going to the range this weekend for some testing. Yes, I'm going to break my rule & bring new guns to a big match. Testing is needed. But the forecast is for 99+ degrees here (with high humidity), so I imagine any load data I got might be "compromised."

Now, we have a good friend from Pennsylvania that shoots with us. When it's about 20 degrees, he has been known to put on a flannel shirt over his T-shirt. I figure Pennsylvanians must be use to cold weather. But I also figure surely the snow has melted by July . . . just what is the typical temperature at Williamsport in July, anyway?

the average hi temp is 83 for that weekend.it can get up in the high 90's.the weather on the mountian in williamsport can change pretty quick. It's been pretty cool so far this year.I would bring sweat shirts,a hat,a coat and rain gear.I will be the funny looking guy with the sorts and the coat on.:D

If you haven't got it with you , you'll probably need it so it's good advice to bring clothes for any weather. I always keep rain gear handy, that way it seldom rains.

What follows isn't really shooting related, but the thread got started here. Those of who want to skip it, feel free.

Since the thermometer was going to 100+ today, I figured I'd not get any meaningful load info for the new rifles -- at least, not Pennsylvania meaningful. So, I stayed home & did some mowing. Hey, it's not as easy as it sounds.

The battery in the tractor won't hold a charge for more than a few hours, so I have to put it on the charger when I'm going to mow. I'm too cheap to buy a new battery as long as the old one can be made to work with a couple hours charging. Now, the tractor sits in an outbuilding without power. The only outbuilding that has power also has the best roof, so my wife insists that's what we use for storing all the stuff we'll never use again in our lifetimes. So I have to put on tick & chigger repellent, walk way out to the building, pull the battery & carry it back to the nearest outlet, then hook up the charger.

Did that; now it's 10:30 & getting hot. I decide I'll only mow the strip out by the street that the neighbors can see. And what the hell, I'll hit the spot we can see when looking out the kitchen window.

By the time I'm done, I'm pretty thirsty. In such a case, my wife always likes gin & tonic. Well, I don't drink much, but the thought kept running through my head. . . I rummage around in the cabinet we keep the booze for when people visit. There is a new bottle of gin; I won't open that. And another, a real old one. Pour the gin & tonic water together . . .

Ack! ma gin gone bad!

I should have gone to the range. In looking over the relays for Match 4 (when Ed set his new record), it was pretty clear that if you draw bench one, you aren't likely to get four good targets. Maybe not even one good target. But what will I say if I don't draw bench one? You have to have your excuses prepared, you know. Shooters are way to sophisticated to take just any lame excuse. Now if I'd done my load development for the new rifles in 100-degree weather, that would do it. Guess I'll just have to wait for another hot day.

Charles, There is a match June 27&28- Would like to see you make a match before the World Open! Besides you have to have your priorities straight Guns before a new battery. Kathy does the mowing I do the Reloading.

Williamsport

Charles actually bench 1 has the highest winning percentage over the last 4 years. Some days it's good and some days it's not the place to be. Matt

Charles, if you're looking for someone with an original excuse for any occasion, look up Matt Kline once you get here. That's K.. l.. i.. n.. e.. He could win a pullitzer prize if he wrote down all the ones he's told me! My excuses hain't a patch on his creativity! :D

Vinny, Phil is into movies now! He has kicked all or butt so he moved on to bigger challenges like hooking up home theaters!

Actually Vinny,

Kathy is the one who scared me away. She told me that if I came back I was gonna get beat like a rented mule, so I took heed. Looking at the results so far, she wasn't kidd'n either!

I wasn't too worried when Joe said the same thing! :)

shoot

Well Phil at least i show up to shoot and not at home watching DESIGNING WOMEN

Actually Matt,

I'd never heard of this but it IS rated 3.9 on Netflix!

Is it any good? :D

Back on topic Charles, They're calling for 90's here Thursday. So, figure on a load for something between 110f and snow. You'll be safe.

Um, Phil, where would I get snow?

I'd hoped you were going to be at the WO & we'd get a chance to meet. Since you're doing home theaters, the only incentive I could offer is that I use to be an audio engineer. Check out your copy of the (vinyl) Red Clay Rambler's Stolen Love, or

I did more classical records than old timey, but somehow 4mesh & Faure don't seem a likely mix . . .

Speaking of mixing (done live, we didn't multitrack), in a digital age all that analog experience is moot. Plus, in the 35 intervening years, I've forgotten a lot. Including what snow feels like.

Charles,
I've seen snow here the second week in june, and I'm talking still-on-the-ground snow. Not that many years back. I've also been at my river lot for the 4th of July and that campfire, well, it wasn't just for show or nighttime. It was a necessity. Then the last few WO's it's been hotter'n a two-peckered billy goat.

Somehow I don't remember such drastic changes in the weather when I was a kid. I go from having the heat one day to AC the next, and I mean literally the next day. Already this year I can remember 80+ one day and sub freezing the next.

On the club's website there's a link in the menu to the weather graphs. These are from the NWS and they've also got a wind graph too. Keep an eye on them in the days leading up to the open and load accordingly, if you can wait that long. They're usually pretty close, at least closer than the crappy 7 day forcasts that just predict a high and low (pulled from a pill bottle of numbers). 10mph wind is pretty tough, 15-20 and ... well... when it says 15-20 on the nws, its gonna be rough.

I don't even have guns or reloading equip now so there's not much chance of me making it to the match. All my stuff was "stolen" by a friend and his dad who have yet to show up at a match this year either. If you guys are heading into Williamsport for any spirits and chow, let me know, I'd buy ya a beer or three! I even know a few places that sell beer AND food! (It isn't just for breakfast any more you know)

Perhaps we'll meet Friday or Sat sometime. Any number of guys down there have my number. Gimme a jingle.

That's about what it requires to get sound off a blu-ray disk. Is it any wonder this stuff hasn't caught on. The average consumer would have to be out of their mind to get involved with digital audio hi-def playback.

Well, I'm old enough to own some vinyl, but that's an astute observation there!

Actually, I think all that analog knowhow is really more valueable than people give it credit for. Sorta like knowing how to do the math that your calculator is giving the answers to.

I also think digital audio sucks, in more ways than one. And about the only thing I think that's more worthless than digital audio is digital video. I guess if the industry markets it hard enough that digital is better, some folks will actually believe it. I'm a bit old school in that respect. I like digital stuff too, just not when its task is analog! If you think digital audio is a pain ita... You oughta see what they've done to it on blu-ray disk... It's a nightmare.
