Picked up a REM 7mm MAG for $300 after $30 mail in rebate. I want to build a long range shooter out of it to use for sniper shoots and deer/elk. I would love a cut rile barrel but my wallet is thin in the skin.

Any suggestions on a good $200-300 barrel?

I will only shoot 140gr bullets and up, what rate of twist should I use? (26")

I will probally put some type of coating on the rifle, I have to use chrome molly correct?

You are looking for a good $200 to $300 Barrel, but are you leaving any room for the money it costs for the gunsmith to fit the barrel to the rifle.

On our benchrest rifles, that already have trued actions (more cost for you). A typical barrel that is about $250, plus $150 for the gunsmith to fit the barrel to the action. That's $400 for a barrel, provided you don't have to pay for the action to be trued up.

Paul, yes I have considered the extra cost for cutting and truing the action, that's why I figured on the price range above just for a tube. I figure between $500-650 just to get my action and barrel squared away, haven't decided on the stock yet figure between $100-250 and the scope I haven't decieded on yet.

Some work I will do myself like the stock work, coating the metal and trigger. So right now I need info on decent barrels. I know Douglas, Hart, Shilen and a couple of others are out there, but figured that someone would know and swear by the name of a not so popular name. My first choice is a cut barrel and then button, but I do now that many of the new button rifle barrels are typicaly more accurate than most shooters. I'm open to suggestions.
 
A 9-twist bbl. works well with bullets up to & including the length of S175MKs & Berger 180 VLDs in my 284s, at velocities of around 2800fps. Any of the custom barrel makers will turn you a blank to Remington's Sendero contour if you're wanting to stick with a fairly light target-weight bbl., and most stock makers are familiar with the contour, so inletting wouldn't be a problem.

When you mentioned 'coating', did you mean something like GunKote heat-cured paint? If so, it makes no difference whether you're using it on chromoly or SS surfaces. I've used GunKote on several of my own rifles, and it works quite well for me. However, you have to first thoroughly de-grease, then blast the surfaces to be painted with something like Starblast XL. You also need an oven large enough to hold the barreled action - both to preheat before painting, and then to cure the GK at 300-325F for an hour. If your kitchen oven is large enough inside, you can use it, but be advised, your wife may not care for the chemical smell that GK gives off while being cured.
 
Is there any real difference in accuracy and barrel life between the stainless and chrom moly barrels? Pretty much my understanding is stainless is best for resisting weather a little hard to machine 416 not as bad as 410 and cost more, chrom cost less same level of accuracy typicaly blued or coated. If what I said is correct then buying stainless and coating it is a waste of time and money. I do realize barrel life has many factors that come into play.
 
416R stainless is fairly easy to machine and get a nice finish in the bore. Krieger stopped offering 410 - IIRC, the only reason they offered it in the first place was as a substitute for 416R on lightweight sporter profile barrels that might see use in extreme cold conditions. As a general rule, there's not a whole lot of difference in accurate barrel life between 416R & chromemoly barrels. Some shooters say that a SS barrel's accuracy gradually drops off with throat erosion, while a chromemoly may stop shooting well more abruptly when it's shot out. I haven't personally had any custom CM barrels, so can't offer an opinion in the matter. Krieger shows a $15 price difference between SS & CM bbls. in their catalog - you're going to have to pay someone to blast & blue a CM if you're looking for a matte, non-reflective finish, so for the most part, the price difference between SS & CM is a wash.
 
Is there a belt less 7mm or .30 cal cartridge out there that equals or surpasses the 7RM and 300WM and will work with the 7RM bolt?
