Windage tops ?

Windage Top - Hart Rest

What is the prefered windage top for a Hart rest ?

Thanks for any input .

Pat

Pat here is a pic of the windage top that recently set the new HV world record agg. It is the epitome of high tech windage tops. :D

Its truely one of a kind. :)

Smitty,
I noticed no mirage shield of any kind. Was that the way the gun was shot for the pending record? If so, would think your hot TX weather would sort of dictate a mirage shield? --Greg

Greg,

I seldom if at all see Jackie utilizing a mirage shield in formal competition all though they are quite common in the Gulf Coast region. I'm almost certain a shield was not used in his record agg at Midland. Maybe Jackie could chime in and shead some light on this matter.

If you look closely at the photo you'll see that Jackie has a March 10x60 variable mounted to his HV to combat heavy mirage.

Not that it matters but I've been competiting for 3+ years and have never used a mirage shield as of yet. :)

I shared the bench with Jackie the weekend he shot the record and I don't remember any mirage shield on his rifle. After he sets up his antique front rest(made from recast steam locomotive parts) and his horsehair stuffed goatskin rear bag, he mostly uses the windage appratus between his ears. :)

That's interesting. Guess some are able to concentrate on the shooting much more than I can. When my barrel heats up, without a shield, I really get bothered by the barrel heat mirage. Then again, perhaps you have so much range mirage that the barrel contribution in negligible? We have it here in Maine but not that often or severe. --Greg

Pat, I've owned several windage tops, and the Bald Eagle was the best IMO. Ron makes a good one too, that's one I never had, but others sure used them.

Pat, I agree with Wayne, the widage top that Ron Hoehn sells is top notch. But, I am not sure he sells them anymore. May be wrong.

Sinclair does sell one that is pretty close. It is amazing that there are so few of the little windage tops made for the standard rests. I guess the advent of entire custom rest sort of negated the need..........jackie

Pat, there is a windage top in the classifieds that looks like a well made top, and the owner is willing to make modifications within reason or at a price. Check it out, price is very reasonable.
