I recently say a listing for Wilson 6PPC seating dies both regular and over sized. What does the term over sized refer to? I cannot find anything that explains this. Tim
I think I've got all the Wilson 6PPC sizes, and the two marked "Oversize" were designed (and I used them for) the old "6PPC USA" brass. The 2 are slightly different, I think one's modified, but I used them for 6PPC USA rifles in Ruger #1, Ruger M77 MKll and Sako BR or A1
So I believe Wilson considers them to be 6PPC USA dies for use in factory rifles.
The original Sako 220R cases measured .440 at the back end. Later 220R (Sako and Norma) cases were .443 at the back end. The bigger cases were actually designated 6PPC USA to denote the difference. Sako and Ruger factory rifles in 22 and 6 were designated as 'PPC USA'. The 'modern' Lapua 220R cases are also .443 at the back and over time this has become the normal standard for PPC brass. It could be said that all 'modern' PPC's are actually PPC USA's. It's sorta' like the evolution of the BR cases evolving from the original Rem.dimensions to the Lapua dimensions becoming the standard.
The Wilson 6PPC O.S. (over size) seating die I have is a perfect fit for Lapua brass. My Wilson standard 6PPC die is too small at the back end but worked perfectly for an earlier 6PPC I had that was chambered for the original Sako case dimensions.
This may not be a perfectly accurate or complete hx., but it's pretty close.
