Will A 14-Twist, 6PPC Stabilize The Following Bullets?

Hunter

Chasin' the Sunset
1. 68 gr Berger Target, # 24411 (label recommends 13-twist); and

2. 70 gr Sierra HPBT Match, # 1505 (no recommended twist shown on website).

Someone gave me both of the above and I'd like to know if they'll shoot in a 14-twist, 6PPC before opening the boxes.

Yes. Bullet weight isnt really the hole issue. Jacket lenght has more to do with it i think. Either way i think your in good shape. lee

As to what Lee said, yes on stable... The 70gr MK's will "hang" with the customs quite well... Weights are good from lot to lot about .15 to .2gr ES typically... The Ogive needs checked, typically will find one to two ogive lengths in a 100rd box.. Some barrels will REALLY shoot the MK's suprisingly well.

With the cost of components going >.... At .20 a bullet, the 500 rd boxes of 70gr MK's is a good deal and perform.

I think you'ld be pushin' it with the 70 grainers but seems I'm the odd man on this. You'll gravitate to a choice of custom 68g or less bullets at some point so why not shoot the 70s and develop your own opinion along the way.

One of the more recent developments is the popularity of the 13.5" twist barrel. I believe that it was Lester Bruno that was responsible. He discovered that with his 00 BT bullets (that I believe are made with an .825 length jacket) that that twist really works well. Some time back, I seem to remember that one of the big names in the history of benchrest said that he thought that they obviously would work, that bullets made with .825 jackets might be a little longer than ideal for a 14" twist. Another way to get to this relationship is to use a bullet that is slightly shorter, and I believe that my late friend Del Bishop was an early adopter when J4 started making .790 jackets. Going forward a number of years, Berger has done a lot of design and testing before adopting a new design that is their Column bullet, and I don't think that it is accidental that it is made with a .790 jacket. I am sure that they recognize that the 14" twist is the most common, and have optimized their design for that.

In all honesty i have shot 80gr Berger bullets in one of my bartlein 14twist barrels just to see if they would stabilize. They will, and they group. Having my own place to shoot any time i desire, i tend to try different things that i otherwise wouldnt. Lee

I've shot both the 68 Berger and 70 Sierra in a variety of bench guns with 1-14 twist and they stabilized with no problems. I regularly use the 70 gr. Sierras for barrel break in and in the past used the 68 Berger extensively in competition.

These comments apply to mainly Hart barrels with 1 - 14 twist which I shot 20 years ago. I've only recently gotten back into benchrest shooting.

I had twenty rounds loaded up for my 6ppc coyote gun with Nosler 70gr Spitzer bullets, never did go after the dogs but shot them in my bench gun just because, I was really supprised how well they grouped.

I just noticed that the label on a box of Berger 65 gr. bullets also says to use a 1-13 twist or faster. I've been shooting them with good results in my LV with 1-14 twist. They make nice clean holes at both 100 and 200 yards.
