Why did that happen

I pulled my Rem 308 out on the choate varminter stock. When I put it back in and shot it, it scattered the first two shots and settled the third in a little high and left of where it was sighted. I proceeded to fire 4 groups of five that came in with a three single hole about 5/8" in diameter. I would think mounting it back in an aluminum bedding bloc it should have returned to zero and shot well right off the rip..

Aluminum bedding blocks work a whole lot better after they've had a layer of a good bedding compound applied to them. Drill some dimples in the block with a 1/8" to 3/16" bit about 3/32" to 1/8" deep to hold the bedding compound, then bed it with Acra Glas Gel (with aluminum powder), Marine Tex, or something similar.

The problem you experienced was the action finding where the bedding block wanted it to be. Make the bedding block do what you want instead of vice-versa. :D

Also, make sure there is plenty of clearance around the action screws....the factory holes though the aluminum block are usually too small....you don't want the threads of the action screws touching the block.

What Hovis said! When did anybody take anything apart on a rifle and have it return exactly to zero, except by accident.
