Which rings and bases?

Will be mounting a Nightforce Benchrest 12-42x56 on a Savage 12 LRPV. Will want 20 moa base. Suggestions?

Believe the 30mm Burris Signature rings have a + and - .010 insert available. When weight is not problem, these are always my solution. The Zee rings use Weaver-style bases, so if a picatinny rail is to your taste, you can use one of those. If not, any Weaver-style bases.

The plus to the Signature rings is they don't stress the scope.

The Burris Signature Zee rings clamp by bending steel at a weakening cut, rather than with a separate piece. I have run into situations where they would not slide over a Picatinny base. I have never had the problem with a Weaver base.

On a related issue, I have always found it amusing that so called tactical rings, and their bases are, in many cases secured to the action with four little bitty #6 screws. A chain can never be any stronger than its weakest link. If I had to stick with that size for a big heavy scope, in an application that might see some rough use, I would carefully epoxy the base(s) to the action (but not the screws).

Boyd,

As you note, once Burris Zee rings are tighten on a Weaver base they won't go onto the larger Picatinny rail. But it's easy enough to spread the ring back to fit with the application of a small flat screwdriver tip in the slot and a twisting or prying force.

I have gone to Picatinny Rings and Bases on all of my rifles. Makes life much easier. For the Savage Ken Farrell Rings and Bases have never failed me. If you can't afford them Bench Source makes very good bases and Brownells sell Tactical Precision HRT and TSR Rings. Evolution Gun works makes both in expensive rings and bases. All that have been mentioned make 20MOA bases. I would stay with Picatinny Rings and bases for centerfire rifles and leave the Weaver mounts for the rimfire. Have never been impressed with compressed metal powder rings and bases or rings with plastic or delrin inserts.

Ken Farrell Rings and Bases. I have the 20 MOA base mounted on my Savage 10FCP and use the High rings for my NightForce 12-42.

Cheers,

Finest quality +moa base I have ever used is Richard Near's. They are machined like fine jewelry and guaranteed to be .0003" within perfect tolerance.
Actually evaluated several premium MOA bases several years ago. Badger Ord, Warne, NightForce and Near were at hand. The Near was all claimed to be...

Warne makes a steel Weaver base that is very fine. The Weaver Steel, think they call them Grand Slam now, are excellent and are marked with same #s
as the aluminum bases. I no longer have any +moa bases. Couple of scopes do not have the 70moa or greater elevation adjustment and I use a couple of .005
thick brass sheet material to shim. I use a Bushnell 74-3333 borescope-collimator to ascertain the elevation gain afforded by the shim.

Near Mfg is the ticket for a +moa base when you really want to be sure of excellence.
