Which McMillan Stock style???

I am in the process of picking components for a .300wsm and am looking for opinions on the following McMillan stock styles:

Remington HTG
Sako Varmint
Remington Varmint

The rifle will primarily be a long range hunting rifle, but could possibly compete in an egg shoot or two. Any thoughts on these would be appreciated.

Look at the "A" series as well, A5 & A2. If you go HTG consider an adjustable cheek piece.

I wouldn't recommend an 'A' series for competition although they sure are a sweet walk around hunter. I have one and it's really hard to shoot for competition. The forearm is tall and narrow and tapers downward toward the trigger. If you're a bipod shooter then it's OK.

I've never handled the HTG but I've got the other two and I like the Sako much better.

I would use the Tooley MBR, although for a smaller rifle I've always been intrigued with the idea of building one on the Anschutz BR-50 stock. Problem is, I've never been able to see, let alone shoot one.

The two things that I look for are FLAT and wide forearm which is also essentially parallel to the bore. And flutes which stop short of the receiver ring for carrying. True BR stocks SUCK this way for carrying which is why at a BR match you see guys carrying guns around over their shoulders. I think that for varminting and occasional comp the vertical pistol grip is nice. Cool anyway

Now, if you could get an A-5 with a low and flat forearm..........

Like this one. It's an A5 and rides the bags great, I love it. The A2 is a little taller in the forearm.

My Choice

The McMillan hunting stocks while nice don't offere you anything you dont already have in a hunting stock except fiberglass.
Take a look at what they call there Hunter Benchrest Stock.
It resembles the Tooley MBR Alinwa was talking about except it only 2-1/4 inches wide so you can shoot it like a hunting rifle. The MBR is what they call 3 inches wide but all of mine measure exactly 2.85 inches.
Off the bags it shoots great as well and it comes in all the same colors.

I stand by by original post. I have a Tooley MBR and love it, I've shot rifles in a HBR Stock and they shot great.

McMillan A5, Harris BR Bipod Type "S" with a pod lock and a small rear bag of sorts. The flats on the HBR and the Tooley work great but, in field conditions lack for comfort. Now, if your building a LR Hog Rifle, I may stand corrected.

I have a MBR and really like it, but one thing I am looking for in this stock is rounded edges on the stock. Being a hunting rifle, I am sure all of my shots will not be in ideal situations.

Does the Sako Varmint have checkering or any texture to it. A slick, slippery stock could be a problem in wet weather.

If a stock tends to be slippery, some of the stick on Pachmayr rubber is really cool stuff. It's called PacSkin

I used some PacSkin on the rolled sheet alloy cheekpiece I made for a target rifle that was a tad overweight. It did a great job until the oil in my skin reacted with it somehow.

Mammy! How I love yer, how I love yer!

Good to know, I wasn't aware.

'Course I gave up sleeping with my rifles years ago..... I WILL get up of a night just to go over and check if a new toy is STILL THERE though......and sometimes touch it......
