What went wrong?

Hi Folks:

I recently re bedded two Mauser rifles and now cartridges will not chamber in either rifle. One is a 25 06 and the other is a 7mm Rem. mag.

The cartridge will enter the chamber to a point just short of allowing the bolt handle to be lowered to lock the action. This happens on both rifles using full length re sized or new ammo.

There are slight "scratch" marks beginning about 3/8" from the rim of the shell on each cartridge after an attempt to chamber the case.

I have looked into the chambers of both rifles and I can see nothing that is foreign in the chamber. I took steel wool and spun it in the chamber to "clean" any bedding material that may have gotten in the chamber but this did not help.

I have bedded many rifles in the past and never had a problem until now. I find it difficult to believe that the same problem has happened to both rifles.

Any suggestions as to how I may solve my problem? Oh yes, my gunsmith will be gone for the next two weeks so I would like to get these guns shooting before then.

TIA,

Zeke

Have you tried it with the action screws backed off?

Jim

Some things to try...

Will the bolts close okay without ammo?

and remove the actions from the stock and try it...

I would not think you could get bedding compound in the chamber... that doesn't make sense.

Obstruction

I'm not a Mauser person so I may not know what I'm talking about here, but I've had a scope mount screw extend through the receiver ring before and interfere with the bolt. Would that be a possibility here?

The action screw is a good call. I've had to customize action screws for different stocks. nhk

Is bedding, the only work done on them? The front action screw goes into a blind hole on a large ring Mauser, so it can't be the front action screw on those actions. Does it do this with the extractor removed?---Mike Ezell

Scope Mount Screws

In addition to the above suggestions, I have had problems with scope mount screw protruding down (installed wrong length screw for the job) inside the action.

You might have gotten a bit of the bedding compound into the chambers. I had this happen once when the action screw pushed a small amont of the bedding comppund up through the action and of course it then went into the chamber - luckily it popped off after I found it.

It might be that you pulled them down a little tighter than they were originally, and a thread from the front action screw is now protruding up into the bolt lug recess.

what went wrong

the Mauser has a very long rear tang, You could have too much tension and the action is flexing, this usually means on a mauser that the bedding is off.
Try the screws

I seen that happen alot, guy asks a question then disappears never to be heard from again. Meanwhile guys are trying to answer the question but not a peep from the OP. Jon
