What is best method to size 308 win brass down to 6.5x47?

I saw a post about this, I think. Just don't remember where.

I want to try this to make use of the LR primer and flash hole.

Thanks

Roy

Yes, I made 6.5 X 47 by sizing 308 cases.
Using a short post made the same as was done for waldog cases. You can push
the shoulder back with a 308 die. Then a 7-08 and finally a 260 die. I trimmed once after
the 308 die to 1.870 and then to 1.850 after 260 die. Set the last die for light crush before
fireforming. This is pretty straight forward . The post used to replace the shell holder has
approx. a .300 long nose .425 dia and made of mild steel. I also neck turned to fit, didn't take much. The post just snaps in, in place of the shell holder

What is best, a FL or reg die? Also, what is this post you write about. Can I buy this or make my own? I don't have a lathe or mill?

Keep it coming Bob, sounds real interesting.

FL die. Bob's way will work. You can use anything that will fit inside the die and not scratch it to push the case in. Just a bit more work if the pusher won't snap into a shellholder. You're going to have to "tap" the case out, of course. Use a punch that will fit down the neck, and won't mar the flashhole on the inside of the case.

Use a fair bit of lube . . .

If you're going to make a fair number of cases, get up with Butch Lambert, esp. if you don't already own the intermediate size FL dies. See

http://benchrest.com/showthread.php?57715-Skip-Otto-form-dies

I have a set of Skip's dies -- two actually, one for making cases from .404 brass as well -- and they work just fine.

Roy, The post is not complicated, and nothing real critical. the lower end is just like
a shellholder, snaps into the ram. Instead of having a pocket on top to hold the rim, it
has a post that rises about .300-.400 and is about .050 smaller in dia. than the case
at its largest point. This can be used to make lots of other cases with off the shelf dies.
I cut the grooves with a parting tool. Takes 15 minutes to make. The dies are not tightened
all the way down, only as far as needed. Using 308-243-260 dies, you will have a 20
degree shoulder, this will of course form out on 1st firing. The important thing is,
size only enough, that you have some crush with you last die. I generally let case length
stay a bit long thru the first dies, but cut finished length before loading. Also check loaded
round diameter at the neck. Must fit your neck

Bob,

Would any other case work? I have a 6x47 Lapua and was wondereing if 22-250 brass might work, any thoughts from anyone?

Thanks,
Med.

Are you thinking you will get your extreme spreads down using the large primer?
I've been looking at 30 to 40 fps spreads on a 308 Lapua Palma wildcat and wondering if forming some brass with large pockets would make an improvement.

Thanks Charles,

Butch's website seems to be down at the moment, I like Butch I'll give him a call.

Jay,

I'm not trying to reduce extreme spreads, I'm good where I'm at with Lapua brass. I have a tactical shoot coming up where I may not be able to recover all of my brass, and at $110 per hundred for Lapua brass, I'm just trying to come up with something to save a buck ( if I don't sacrifice accuracy). Just thinking a little, I'm a tight a$$, and at night I squeeze coal into diamonds, since out here in coal country we seem to have plenty of it we can't sell (THANKS OBAMA)!!!:mad::mad:;);););)

Thanks for the replies,
Keep 'em comi'n.
Med.
