What cartridges are most popular at 1000 yards in Bench Rest ?
Thanks Max

Goto match results on some of the clubs websites and look at the equipment list, that should give you an idea whats being shot. BUT-its a CHEVY,ford,or dodge debate no matter what someone thinks is the most popular , there are two others who disagree.
But here are a few of the ones I see at Matches(don't crucify me for missing one).
300WSM
6mmDasher
6.5x284
6-6.5x47 lap
6mm BR
300 Win Mag
300 wthby
6.5 x 47 lap
260 rem
6 XC
280 AI
7mmRSAUM
7mm WSM
there are just a few of them, all pretty popular. Mattd

Got to agree with Matts. It even depends on the time frame you're using. Probably, because of an early "popularity," the 300 Ackley still leads. Currently in less favor.

"Popular" in the statistical or emotional sense?

Statistical is easy, just do it. On the emotional side -- thinking back to high school, a long, long time ago, what we considered a "pretty girl" was different from today.

Charles along with the 300 Ackley is the 308 Baer, one of the '' Pretty Girls"'. Max if you don't like recoil the 6mm Dasher is for you! This I'm guessing is doing to be a light Gun? If you want to have fun try Heavy Gun in 300 WSM.

I wasn't shure the bench rest shooters used the magnums. What bolt face does it take for a 6.5x47?
Thanks Max

Standard .30/06 (or .308, if you're younger, or 6BR if younger still . . .).

BTW, most cartridge diagrams are now shown on Wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/6.5x47_Lapua

I would dispute the Wikipedia claim that it is "superior."

one more BTW: The move away from magnums is a pretty recent development in 1,000 yard benchrest.

Edit: I should have been clearer on the "superior" remark. I think this is a compromise chambering. They may well have met their design objectives. For me, the only performance criteria that counts is winning. Barrel life is not a concern. Etc. Cost of ammunition is not a concern. For those for whom it is, it may well be a "superior" chambering.
