Warren Page in NZ with .240 Page Super Pooper

Warren Page is credited with 14 one-shot kills on red deer stags in New Zealand with his .240 Page Super Pooper. When I read One Man's Wilderness by Warren Page, he took his 7mm Mashburn to New Zealand in 1956 and shot red deer on the Dart River with it. However, I can not find any references to Page taking his .240 PSP to New Zealand in that book. Would anyone have any references to the 14 kills on red deer with his .240 PSP? I am interested as I am currently building a .240 PSP. Thanks for any assistance with this.

I don't know whether or not there is an online index available for the various GUN DIGEST publications (GD, HANDLOADERS DIGEST, GUNS ILLUSTRATED, etc.), but in one of them that I have (far too many) I recall a photo of Page and a game animal taken in mountainous terrain with mention of the .240 PSP.

GUN DIGEST, '61, pp. 39-44, ".243 or .244?" Includes photo of Page & Japanese deer killed in New Zealand using a BSA chambered in .240 PSP. This is not the article I was thinking about.

That's promising. Either he went on a second trip to New Zealand or he took both his .240 PSP and 7mm Mashburn in 1956. I would really like to see if he actually did kill 14 red deer stags (hirsch) with his .240 PSP in New Zealand and whether they were neck/head shots or body shots. The Japanese deer are also called sika deer. Thanks for looking up that article.

Should have a barrel life similar to a .243 Win. or 6mm Rem.; from a ballistics standpoint there should be little difference. The .240 PSP case capacity is only slightly greater than the two factory rounds.

I would expect roughly 25 fps slower than the 6mm Ackley Improved with same barrel length, same brass and same pressure - but it should feed much smoother. Barrel life I would expect to be similar to a .243 - the very long neck and 28 degree shoulder should off-set the increased powder capacity. Used for hunting as opposed to competition, I would expect 1500 rounds before accuracy diminishes significantly.

I just found the reference to the 14 one-shot kills on red deer by Warren Page in New Zealand with the .240 PSP. It was in the Speer #5 Manual pages 118 to 122. Also listed are loads:

24 inch barrel 1 in 10 twist:
90 grain Speer
48 grains 4350 at 3343 fps
51 grains 4831 at 3340 fps

I also found out today that after a 4 month wait, my .240 PSP dies have been made and are in the post.

You might also be interested in Page's story in the '59 GD-"Bullet Bustup"- where he also mentions the PSP again on a New Zealand Red Deer trip (same trip mentioned earlier?), killing "two dozens beasts". He used the 105 gr Speer and the 100 gr. Nosler.

Good luck with the PSP-Personally, I like my .243 Super Rockchucker!

Good shooting.

I signed up to on-line Gun Digest but still couldn't open up the 1959 "Bullet Bustup" article. I wonder whether he was head/neck shooting the red deer with the .240 PSP or just normal body shots? Is the .243 Super Rockchucker a straight neck-down of the 25-06 or is the body blown out and the shoulder angle changed?

"...all but one were hit with vital precision".

The SRC has the shoulder pushed back to 28 degrees with the body dimensions unchanged, leaving a longer neck.

Good shooting.

I know old thread but I just wanted to say a friend had warren pages 240 super pooper in his safe. could have knocked me over when he pulled
it out and handed it to me. the real surprise was it was a bas action and the butt did not have a recoil pad but was checkered instead. the checkering was as crisp as any new rifle I own.

I have a set of dies for a PSP'r. Wish I had the rifle that went with them.
I've shot a lot of Red Deer with a 6MM. 85 gr. bullet running fast. They expire quickly.
