Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 ?

Although I am not using one, I don't think you will see any bullet holes at 500 yds. That takes a much larger scope. James

depends on the target color.....
sun position...
but not a spotting scope...

Did not intend it to be a spotting scope. You're getting ahead of yourself.

If you're not using a spotting scope you're going to need a lot more magnification than 20X for the range you specify.

not necessarily...
see my first post...
what caliber...30 is easy to see at 20x with all things right...
now make it a 22 with the sun in front on a black target , dark background, and forget it.

The qualities of optics are quantifiable, and you generally get what you pay for. Also, like guns IF you get expert advice you WILL get repeatable results.

Get some opinions from FOLKS WHO TEST THIS STUFF. Unless someone like Fred Bohl does the testing all you're gonna' get is opinions. I'm not qualified to have an opinion on optics but I HAVE at least looked thru these alongside others. I wasn't as impressed as others have been. I looked for resolving power, eye relief, accuracy around the edges and brightness. I don't understand 'spherical aberration' nor do I have the capacity to test for things like light transmission so I just have an opinion, slightly better than a guess but still highly subjective. My "acuity testing" consists of resolving target details at 200yds and from even this rudimentary test I've learned that 'power' has little to do with it. I was once testing a 308 hunting rifle at 200, shooting a 1.5-5 Leupold Vari-X III and was commenting on target details......... next to me my friend was shooting a 6.5X20 "Souper Sniper" with knobs and dials and "compensators" of all sorts. He couldn't see what I was talking about.

Me-5 power
Him-20power

And I could see stuff he couldn't. At 1/4 the power.

My "testing" of the Vortex was accomplished at a Sportsman's Show and consisted of looking across the event center. I didn't buy one.

I've never read an actual review of one of these but here are some "reviews" from other sites on the 'net. Worth exactly what you've paid for them :)

I consider these to be opinion pieces but at least they're slightly more useful than guesses.....
