video from the Cactus

Here's a vid from the HV100 Saturday afternoon. All the details are in the description.

This is a good example of having to "chase the first shot". After firing two or three foulers and then some sighters into the bottom right corner ( I shoot at the right side in a right-to-left wind), I fired two shots at the bottom right sighter bull that went where I expected them to given the wind conditions. Then I ran up to the record and fired my first shot. To my surprise, it went a whole ring further to the left than what I expected. So I quickly went down to the center sighter and checked the condition to see what I missed. It went exactly where the other sighters went--about a bullet to the left of the mothball. So then I ran back up to the record and fired the next four shots in quick succession while holding a full ring's worth farther to the left than the original hold point. Luckily, it was a successful chase of the first shot and the group went .119". The second shot was fired around video minute 4:17. The 5th and final shot was fired at around video minute 4:40.

If you look closely, you can see all my bullets streaking through the paper from slightly right of the last wind flag. The sun and conditions were such that the video picked up most of the "vapor trails".

I still don't know why the first shot went so much farther left. There must have been a gust of wind I didn't see. Luckily it happened on the first shot rather than the fifth like what usually happens to me!

Looked pretty good.
.119" Hummm. That wind was kicking. But, a lot of let offs.....
I miss the Desert.
Anyway. That was pretty cool.
I can now direct people to a site and watch how it's done.

I was at WWCCA. Today 54 degrees and testing XBR.
Another guy was perturbed. Upset that the "Precision Shooting" guys could shut down the 200y. range for a weekend. I said what matches do you shoot... Didn't really get an answer. He liked to shoot his Garand. I said that's cool. He shoots J. Garand matches. I said Why can't I shoot my .308 Garand????? He didn't have an answer.
I asked how much the club gets for J.Garand matches? He said that's not the point. "I can't shoot when I want". I said I have memberships in 2 clubs. And there are days both clubs are closed to members. Still no answer.
Can't show them the water. And can't please them all.

But, A good vid.
Thanks.
Keep it up there.

Why wait so long to go to the record target? Looks like the 5 oclock tailing condition was the predominate condition for bench 50 at that time of the day.

With that tailing 5 oclock wind I think I would have been up on the record target within the first minute, after having fired a few sighters.

Having waited as long as you did, if the wind had reversed at minute 4, it would have been very exciting chasing the reversal on top of compensating for a .250" first shot unexpected impact...........Don

OK Don, I'll bite. How can you determine the predominate condition along a 100 yard long flight path by only looking at half of one flag at the very end of the trajectory????

That's good stuff grouper. There's nothing like a live video shot of the action. What kind of setup did you use to record it?

Camera/video/second party assistant? I'm thinking of trying something like this, using a wide angle lens.

Glenn

Thanks Glenn.
I used a Sony dcr-sr47 handycam with 60x zoom Ziess lens. It's a little tiny thing, maybe the size of a couple of bars of soap. It's mainly used for hunting video because of how small and lightweight it is but I thought it would be neat to use it for this.

It has three video quality modes and I used the highest level for this clip. It is really clear on the playback and even on my computer but it got a little blurred when it transfered to Youtube. I'm not sure why yet.

I had no assistant in taping the match. I just put the camera on a Monfrotto tripod with a pistol grip head and pushed record. When I had time, I would go out from the loading area and try to zoom in and out on Larry S. and Joe O shooting. I got some pretty good footage of them if anybody would like to see it?

Great group and the video is a treat.

How big was the file that you uploaded? The reason that I ask is that Yahoo has expanded its email attachment limit of 25 MB and if it would fit. I would like to be able to view the sharper version. Also, I have not worked with video, but I think that some of the picture hosting web sites also host video, with a 2G free account limit. Maybe their compression would be less destructive of image quality. Also I seem to remember that there are HD video hosting web sites.

What you have here is a great teaching tool. If a friend had a similar camera and you set one down range nearer the target (Obviously you would need to have the range to yourselves for this.), and the other was shooting over the shooter's shoulder and showed all of the wind flags, at slight magnification, the two videos could be synchronized, and displayed at the same time on a two frame screen. One use would be to show what happens when shots are fired in various conditions. If there was a way for the viewer to freeze the frame at any point, a lot could be learned.

I know;easier said than done. It's easy to daydream on the other fellows nickle.

Well Done!

Boyd

I'd enjoy very much seeing the video of the other shooters. 6mmbr has some videos that are great to watch especially for those of us who haven't been to a lot of big matches or are just starting out in this game.

I really enjoy watching top-flight shooters put a gun through its paces, and watching the flags as they go. Having a simultaneous shot of the target and a running commentary from the shooter (post production) would be priceless!

Being able to learn some of the details that run through their minds as they approach the bench, and then hearing their decision making as they run a group would be great...I think that would fall into the "daydreaming" part that Boyd mentioned, though.

Thanks Boyd.
The video was just over 500 MB. It took over two hours to upload it to Youtube. Luckily, they don't take near that long to transfer from the hard drive of the camera to the hard drive of my computer. Maybe 10 minutes.

Anyway, I'm afraid emailing the video is going to be a problem if they will only let me send 25 MB. I have looked into my Photobucket account and they have video hosting but limit the MB and bandwidth too. So for now, Youtube is the only way I can show it, but I understand they are in the process of improving HD quality uploads so maybe it will get better.

I have been asked by a few folks to show more video clips so I will work on that for now. But the two camera idea is something I have been thinking about for awhile. I could even do it at the matches with my small camera hidden behind a steel plate by my last windflag and another from the firing line. ONly problem I see is splicing the two footages into one. That is beyond my software's capability but perhaps there are folks out there who could help with that.
