Varmint gun question

I'm looking at a Savage LRPV, 6 BR with an 8 twist, for my next live varmint gun. I need something to go where my 223AI refuses to tread. Would someone like to play devil's advocate and tell me why this is NOT a good idea? Criticism is welcomed.

Don't know about that caliber but the LRPV is reasonably priced and most of them are accurate. Some (like mine in 204 Ruger) are screamers but they do vary. Check to ensure there's perfect contact between the action and the aluminum bedding block--no stock material remnants at the contact points. Mine will not shoot well with the rear action screw tight. The stiff action, heavy barrel, floating bolt head, bedding block etc. are all factors that enhance accuracy. For the money, you can't beat it.

It's not a good idea to ask for opinions, because some will gladly spend YOUR money, but not have to move into the poor house with you. :)

I say GO FOR IT. 6BR is an excellent round. Heck, there's a website largely dedicated to it: www.6mmbr.com

The 1:8" twist will allow you to shoot a wide range of bullet weights, and provided the jackets of lightly constructed varmint bullets (like the Speer TNT) don't fly apart (meaning, choose wisely in lighter weights!), you'll have a very versatile and likely accurate rifle. I figure the .223 AI is good to 400y. Add 50% to that for the 6BR.

And you can haul the 6BR to 600y and 1,000y benchrest matches, and be competitive if you/the rig are good enough. :)

I'm a big fan of the 6BR for Prairie Dogs. I have an 14 twist and am having an 8 1/2 twist built now. All my other rifles are getting dusty since I began shooting the BR.

why not

I use a 6MM BR for P-DOGs and other small furry creatures that run amok in fields. id say go for it as well
