Tomball Results, Great Turnout

We had a great turnout for our first Club Match of the Season, 52 shooters came out for what turned out to be a cold overcast day.

The Competition in the Benchrest Class was very stiff, as we had 32 participants. We had 10 shooters in the Factory Class and 9 in the Modified Class.

A Match always gains a little prestige when you have a true Champion show up, and we certainly had that. The reigning World Benchrest Champion, Gene Bukys, brought his Factory Savage 308 out to shoot the Factory Class. But, he discoverd that he brought the wrong bolt, and it looked like he would not be able to shoot.. I told Gene that I had all of my Heavy Varmint 30BR stuff with me, if he wanted to, he could shoot my Rifle in the Benchrest Class. He said 'sure', and then commenced to nail 23 X's to win the Class. But, it was a hard fought battle, and came down to the last target, as Ed Bernabeo,Vic Smith, and Catalin Login were hot on his heels with 22 X's each. Ed won the 2d place tie breaker, and Vic won the 3d place tie breaker.

We had 17 shooters take home what will become a popular item, our new "Tomball Gun Club 250" hat pins.

Another notable happenning was the winner of the Modified Class, Ginger Duke, (who is, I think 16), who is Joe Dukes Grand Daughter. She used her Grand Dads 6BR to shoot a nice 247 8x in some tricky conditions.

The conditions were typical Tomball, switchy and tricky, and just cold enough to be uncomfortable. The Results are:

Factory Class:
Bill Barras........246 8X
Buddy Pullig.....245 6X
Buddy Dotson...241 4X

Modified Class:
Ginger Duke........247 8X
Glenn Oaks.........246 4X
Faron Frederick....243 6X

Benchrest Class:
Gene Bukys.........250 23X
Ed Bernabeo........250 22X (tie breaker)
Vic Smith.............250 22X (tie breaker)
Catalin Login........250 22X
Gary Walters........250 19X

Thanks to all of the shooters who came out, and thanks to John Jones and Howard Payne for funishing the lunch.

The Tomball Gun Club has dedicated its self to furnishing a venue where shooters can come out, compete, and have a good time.

See everybody again March 7th..........jackie

Congratulations, apparently you guys are doing something right. Any idea on how many used the new XBR powder?

The top 8 shooters in the Benchrest class were shooting some kind of 30 caliber with either 4227 or 4198.

I do not know if any of the 6PPC Shooters were using the new powder.......jackie

Jackie ...

Another marvelous job. The drive over from Austin was well worth it. Thanks again for your hospitality. All the members made me feel at home, especially Russell, whom I shared a bench with, and who pointed out the characteristics of the range and how to read his particular flags. Art :)

So close but so far

I drove down from Fort Worth on Saturday morning. checked into a la Quinta in the Woodlands and spent the afternoon with my son-in-law while my wife spent the afternoon shopping with our daughter. We had dinner at an Outback but I didn't eat much. Just as I entered the door of my daughters apartment I ran for the bathroom where I heaved my guts out. Fortunately the motel was only a couple of miles from the apartment and I was able to get there before the next eruption. At times I felt like I was throwing up my toenails. This continued through the night until about 0600. By this time I was so weak I had my wife extend the motel for another day and spent Sunday in a near coma in bed. Felt good enough to drive back to Fort Worth on Monday but after we got home my wife got sick and we got a phone call this morning from my daughter that my son-in-law came down with my symptoms about 0230 this morning. At first I thought it was food poisoning but now it looks like contagious bug of some kind.

As this was going to be my first time at Tomball I was eager to scope out the range facilities so I'd know how much gear I'd need for future matches. I'd spent some time on Saturday looking for slip-on mud boots, just in case, but didn't find any. Would they have been helpful? Also, about what time did the match break up. I have a 3 1/2 to 4 hour drive back home so don't know if I'd need to spend an extra night. Hopefully I can make the next match on March 7th.

We finished about 1:30, mainly because we had to have 3 relays. But, that is a good thing.

See you in March........jackie

Thanks for the info Jackie. Sounds like that's eminently doable. Be nice if I could just leave all the stuff in the car till next month. :)

Congratulations, Gene and to all of those who held his feet to the fire - some pretty fine shootin'!:)
It appears that the VfS format may 'catch on'!:D RG

Thanks Randy

Thanks for making great 112 Superman Bullets!!! :D They are the best 30cal bullets out there. I know for a fact that 3 out of the top 4 were using your 112's. Gene B (current World Champion), Ed B, and myself. I was sitting on 19x's thru 4 targets and could not pull it off....

I would like to thank Jackie, John, Howard, and Gary for all their hard work and dedication to putting on our club matches......
