Just got a new bunch of 6br Lapua brass and am having problems with the shell holder being to tight. Sometimes it is a little tight on other brass but never this much, I have Lee shell holders. What to do?

That worked went to Shooters Corner here in town and got a redding #1 and all is well.

We are having that same tight fit problem with the new Nosler cases on a couple of 26 Noslers. The brass base is right at the top limit in diameter at the rim. Tried 5 different shell holders, 2 RCBS, 2 Redding and 1 Lyman. All the dame problem, brass wouldn't go. After taking 0.002" off the case bases they work fine now.

There is no burr in my Lee holders, all my 308,25/06 etc fit find, it i just the Lapua brass I have a problem with. But as I said before the redding shell holder fits fine.

Tight shell holder

Just got a new bunch of 6br Lapua brass

I do not have two standards for anything or anybody. Shell holders are a little different. My favorite shell holder is the RCBS because they do not fir except where they touch. I form, cases for short chambers with loose shell holders. The RCBS shell holder allows me to raise the case head off the deck of the shell holder .012”, that is loose. On the other hand I have shell holders that are not loose, they fit. The shell holders that fit do so for a different reason.

I do not make excuses for Lapus brass that does not fit the shell holder. If I had brass that would not fit my shell holders and I was forced to use the cases without options I would determine the thickness of the rim. If it was necessary to shorten the case by grinding the case head I would shove the case into a die then remove the die with the case from the press and install it into a butt grinder. That would be a pivoting ‘V’ block that is operated in an arch and run against a grinder.

Determining how much of the case head had to be removed would be determined by how much the amount of clearance the reloader wanted. I would use a shell holder and feeler gage. Again, my favorite shell holder has a loose fit.

I have no clue as to why a reloader would tolerate cases that will not fit the shell holder.

I can only think of one reason I would want a thick case head; If I choose to reduce the distance the case ran to the front of the chamber when struck with the firing pin I would choose to use cases with thick case heads. A thick rim on a case head would allow for a better fit between the extractor and bolt face.

Then there is the other problem with push feed and control feed. The extractor jumps the rim on push feed or the case is fed up from the bottom behind the extractor and in front to the bolt.

I do not believe the problem can be identified as a tight shell holder, I have tight shell holders; my tight shell holders are tight for a different reason.

Out of 700 Belted cases I found 40 that would not fit a #4 RCBS shell holder. I used a ball peen gasket cutting hammer to drive the cases into the shell holder to make a point.
