Shooting two guns with a Farley Rest

Good morning, Do any of you gents (or ladies) have experience shooting a VFS and Hunter rifle off a Farley rest in the same competition? I have no problem now, shooting 2 with my current rest. The Farley (bought used this past winter) seems faster and smoother. The problem for me is the switching of front bags, between relays. They are a Royal Pain to take out. I have asked Mike Farley to send me a couple more of the nylon or delrin side pins. My thought was to drill and tap the top of each pin, screwing a cap head screw into each. Attach the bottoms of the pins underneath the bag, with a sling of fabric or suitable material. By leaving the cap screws not fully screwed in, slip a wooden or metal, notched handle under the cap heads and lift out the pins, bag et al. Then switch bags, drop the assembly into the rest, seat it, remove the handle, add rifle, adjust side tension and shoot! How much time is there between relays? As it is now, I have plenty of time to switch bags and rifles reset the timer and ready myself for the next relay, often before the end of the first relay. But if someone has already solved this problem in a simpler fashion, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks much, Charles

Have you tried this?...... using a 3" bag , simply turn the whole rest catty-corner (~ 30 degrees) so the Hunter stock rides the edges of the bag

Another solution is an adjustable top. I have an older Fudd but there is another like it being made by someone. I can't recall the name of the company. That one is a nicer unit than the Fudd I have. I use to change bags but once I saw the Fudd and it's infinate adjustability, I thought I would give it a shot. I wouldn't go back - -- - - - -

LH,

Thanks for responding. I did try that method 2 years ago in my first season. It worked well considering I hadn't practiced with it. It certainly is the most simple method. I believe Bill Sargent uses that method when shooting a 6X and a heavy. It certainly doesn't seem to be a negative downrange, lots of Xs. Hey Pete, thanks for chipping in. Right now I am using Dan Greenlaw's first design top, with Edgewood's Farley front bags. A couple of years ago Dan designed a new top that will take forends up to 4-5 inches. I haven't tried it yet. After two years with the 6X and lots of 248s and 249s, I started this season with a 249 and two 250s in a row. Finally! I am not inclined to change a bunch of things, all at once. The Farley is so quick and responsive, my goal is to just use that with the Edgewood front bags. Only problem is the quick change. I'll mess around with a bunch of things "practicing". Something I haven't done enough of. Thanks for your input, both of you.

Hi Charles. I have seen guys with two top units for their Farley rest, quick change. I think Jim Goody use to have one. I am very big on the one I have right now. I have 4 Edgewood bags for mine, two plain and two with a rib sewn in. I never felt my bags cost me any points. I pretty much feel it is not seeing that flag that moved that causes me to loose them.

Something you need to be mindful of; don't use the Farley at it's extremes. I have lost shots because of that.

Charles I just switch bags in my Farley. Loosen the two screws that tension the ears remove the ears switch bags reinstall ears. Both my front bags are Edgewood for the Farley basket.

GLP,

That's what I was thinking. Takes me about 15-20 seconds to change bags in my farley. Why all this fancy twisting rest and complete tops.

I just got 2 Edgewood bags for the Gen 1 Farley that I bought. It's taking me longer to type this than to make the changeover from one to the other bag. A couple minutes of practice is all it took.

Ron

I do however, have two tops for my JJ LOH.
