You still have time to schedule a weekend get away at Beautiful Seymour,Tx. May 20 and 21,2017. You’ll find Good Food, great People and no traffic Jams.

Dont forget to bring your Rail Gun and your most accurate Benchrest Rifle. Most vacationers, that visit Seymour this weekend, will be shooting in the Texas State, Unlimited and Heavy Varmint, 100/200 Championships.

Of course, a hand full of visitors may be playing Golf at the nearby Salt Fork River Estates Golf Complex. The Range is easy to find, there’s only one Golf Course in Town.:D

Turn right in front of the Club House, onto a lightly traveled dirt road. Follow it around to the Range. Call Scott Hunter(940-631-4545) or John Horn(940-636-9984) to make Lodging arrangements before you head out for Seymour,Tx.

Hope to see ya there.

Glenn, I plan on being there, hope to arrive Thursday PM.

I will say that I am a little aggravated that the Gulf Coast Region scheduled two Championship Matches on the same week end. Lake Charles is hosting the Louisianna State Varmint for Score Championship Sunday. This really screws us that shoot both Score and Group.

I know that everybody wants the week ends in Spring to hold their Matches. Heck, I even dropped one of our Tomball Club Matches so Walker County could have that date for a Registered Match.

Maybe next year the powers that be can at least avoid Championship Matches on the same week end.

Scheduling

jackie, I worked for an organization for 31 years, who had high salaried people responsible for event scheduling. There were constant conflicts in scheduling. I think conflicts in scheduling, hurts attendance at some small Benchrest matches. I don't have a clue as to a solution.

Have a safe trip on your way up to Seymour.

Well, I won't make the trip now. The Texas Dept of Transportation has requested a meeting on drive train modifications for the new Aransas Pass Ferrys on which we will be doing the Machine Work.

The meeting will include representatives from The Coast Guard and The American Bureau of Shipping, as these are Class Vessels.

That is Friday afternoon.

I guess I will make the Louisianna State Varmint for Score Sunday.

Good luck to all of those that make the Seymour Match.

My Weather app is predicting 25-30 mph wind on Friday. Good news though it's predicting 10-15 mph on both Saturday and Sunday. Pretty well a calm for Seymour. Hate that you won't be able to make it Jackie. I know how you love shooting your rail.

Breakfast

I was asked by a new shooter and soon to be, a first time visitor to Seymour,Tx. "Are there any Mom Pop restaurants where we can get Breakfast before going to the range"? A Perfectly legitimate question. You gotta Eat.

Since I’ve been going to Seymour, beginning in yr 2000, I just follow the Crowd, at Breakfast time. The “New Maverick Cafe" at 303 N. Main St is a most popular place for a sit down breakfast. Get there about 6:00AM. Great Food.

Another option for an early sit down Breakfast is the Famous Rock Inn Cafe at 207 W. California st. Famous because its been there so long.

Lunch is served at the Range on match Days. Some of the best catering you could expect. It simply soothes your palate.

Match Organizer John Horn will make an announcement as to where we go for Dinner on Friday and Saturday Night. I cant ever remember John making any bad choices. The Food and Hospitality is always top Shelf In Seymour,Tx.

One of the first matches that Seymour had was a three day match. I asked Scott Hunter when that match took place and he said that it there was an invitation stapled to the wall of the stat house. That match took place in 1988. It was a very large match shooting UL, HV and LV classes reminescent of the old Speer matches. They had a match the previous year, but this 3 day match was the start of the Texas State matches taking place at Seymour. Arnold Jewell was showing the prototype of his new benchrest trigger that he was just beginning to make. P. J. Hart showed up for the match from Lafayette, NY. The Rajun Cajun Don Geraci was the hot shooter at that time.

Mike Conry, He Came,He Saw,He conquered

To use a phrase from ancient History, He came, he saw, he conquered. describes what Mike Conry has accomplished, since he has been shooting Benchrest

For the seventh time, Mike Conry won the Texas State UL(10) and Two gun, at Seymour,Tx. John Horn won the Heavy Varmint Championship. Mike Conry and Gary Bristow, sat two benches to my left. After every group shot, both UNL and HV, Mike described what he saw downrange and how he handled some very challenging conditions, with a combination of pick and run shooting techniques.

Mike’s verbal commentary would have made an excellent manuscript for a book about “How to shoot Benchrest.

21 shooters showed up for this years match at Seymour,Tx. There were seven prior World team members in attendance. All seven were later recognized at the awards ceremonies. Three of the seven present ,will be traveling to this years World Championships in New Zealand.

An unwelcomed cold front visited the range on Saturday, and brought unseasonal temperatures for this time of year. Fortunately,Everybody had packed away sweaters and Jackets that provided a little insulation from the Chill..

What was not uncommon was the Wind and mirage at Seymour. Winds, sometimes gusting 25MPH+. The mirage at 200yds,made it sometimes impossible to clearly see bullet holes in the target. Some small groups were shot in some challenging conditions.

Mike Conry,John Horn,Mike Bryant ,Tim Oltersdorf are the big winners.Complete Match results ,for all shooters in attendance ,are previously posted
by Mike Bryant. I apologize if I left a deserving name out of this report. Feel free to correct my memory.

Match Organizers,John Horn and Scott Hunter are doing a great job of making the Seymour,tx match ,One of the best in the Region. A recently opened Private Motel,HH Creek Inn, is a new addition to the local business community at Seymour,Tx, with accommodations as good or better than some well known chains. The old fashion Rocking chairs, out front, in the open foyer, provided a good excuse to pull up a chair and engage in a lively conversation about a variety of topics.

It is important to note, that GRD Scott Hunter announced, during award ceremonies, that the GCR have scheduled registered matches, at two new ranges this year. The Walker County Range at Huntsville,Tx,owned and operated by Larry Deese. The Lubbock,Tx Range has a registered match scheduled, for the first time this year. The Lubbock,Tx match will be run by Kelly Mormon and crew. Kelly is inviting everyone to get out to the Llano Estacado Club at Lubbock and make this first match a great success. With the addition of these two ranges, the lack of places to shoot Benchrest, is no longer a valid complaint here in the GCR.

New Car Dealer, and life of the Party, Mr Ron Sewell, donated some nice, high quality, leather covered note pads to the winners. These were handed out at the awards ceremonies. I sat next to Ron in the loading shed. its an experience I highly recommend for any Benchrest shooter. I am still laughing.

Empty Crown Royal bags were donated by Dr Tim Oltersdorf and handed out to the small group winners, after each match. These bags can be used to store a variety of Benchrest gadgets. I wish I had kept all the one's I've thrown away.:)
Dr Tim is working closely with The Liver Damage association. Dr Tim has promised to remove, from his residence, all reminders, of a lifestyle of excessive consumption of Canadian Drugs.:D

The Texas Okie Ban was temporarily lifted, allowing the unmolested travel, across the Border, for Big Mike Cordes and Joe Hargadine. Mike brought his good friend Ben Stambaugh. Its always good to hang out with foreigners:)

Many thanks go out to John Horn and Scott Hunter and range crew. These two men are working tirelessly to keep the Seymour match, on the list ,of places to shoot Benchrest. I believe I can speak for those in attendance that we all had a great time and look forward to this time next year at Seymour.

Thanks to all who attended. I saw no signs that Benchrest is on the verge of disappearing any time soon.

Glenn,
John said it was more like a B&B as they never made up their beds. we were on the other side of the tracks.
We had a lot of fun and really enjoy the hospitality of Scott and John. A first rate match.
