Savage Long Range Varminter - 22-250

Looking for advice;

- I fully realize a Savage 22-250 Long Range Varminter single shot is not a benchrest rifle.

- I currently consistently shoot a 700PSS .223 with handloads to less than 1/2 moa.

- I am looking for "something different" other than .223.

- I have 22-250 RCBS dies, 8 pounds of H322 and an interest in trying another shooting venue. Ok, I also have some 748 and BLC2 as well...

Apologies for trying to set the table but this all leads to a basic question: will a typical Savage Long Range Varminter single shot typically yield sub-moa accuracy given a reasonable load and break in period?

The reason I ask this question is that there are previous posts that might lead one to believe that this rifle has "issues" with repeatability. Frankly, and NO offense intended, the issue appear to be related to break-in and finding the proper load. But what do I know.

Is there an issue with this rifle or can a buyer typically expect reasonable results. Most of the previous commentary was from 2007. Production moves forward. Times change. Perspectives change.

Does anyone have recent experiences that might provide interesting and informative insights?

....I see no reason why it won't...Most .250's will shoot..;)

I helped a friend change the barrel on his 2009 Savage factory 6mmbr. It would not shoot PERIOD! I have herd from several reliable sources that thier factory barrels are a real crapshoot. Some shoot very well I am told, but if you get a bad one you have to replace it. I am told that Savage is good about this if you send it back.
My friend opted for a "drop in" aftermarket barrel. We found a load in minutes that will easily made 1/2 over all groups at 100 yards ( not true benchrest but more than met his need). I think with a good trigger,propper bedding and a bit better wind reading we could have done better.

My Savage LRPV in 204 Ruger is the most accurate factory rifle I have owned in many years of shooting factory varmint rifles.

I had to remove a small amount of stock material from the top of the bedding block edge so that the action and block mated perfectly. Mine is also sensitive to tension on the rear action screw--I recommend experimenting with it all the way from tight to loose.

My one complaint is that the throat is too long to seat bullets close to the lands--but that doesn't harm accuracy in my rifle.

I have heard of other LRPV rifles that didn't shoot and maybe some of them don't but many do. For the price, you get a lot of action features that enhance accuracy. Once you get used to it, the trigger is great.
 
When I read criticisms of the Savage Model 12 I try always to determine if the author of the material is talking about the 1-9 twist or the 1-12 twist of how much work they've done of developing a load for their rifle. IMO, for $850 bucks, the model 12 is worthy of working with - if you like the sporter stock and can get used to that trigger.

I have one and can't say enough about it. I know of 8 others at the range where I shoot at and @ 200...you had better be on your game. On Sundays we race to shoot the inside circle out of the range targets (1.5").

I believe and others have stated that a little time finding the "sweet load" and what the rifle likes is the problem. Getting use to the trigger and trying to develop loads is not the right way to go about it. Break the barrel in and get use to the trigger...than work the loads correctly. Mine has the 1:9 barrel and is excellent to 600 (if not windy)...still learning the wind game but the rifle's performance is much greater than my skills!

I've got the 12LRPV in 223, 22-250, 6mmBR and one custom in 30BR, you can believe the guns will shoot, I've only personal know of one that wouldn't( John Holiday in Dublin Ga), he called Savage and they told him to send it back and they made it right, I know it's right because I shoot against him and he's tough with that thing now. My 22-250 loves 52 gr Fowler FB Match bullets with 24.8 grs of N-133 and 55 gr Sierra GameKing Spitzers # 1365 with a stiff dose of H380,,,,

Dont know about lrpv, but have a vlp in 22-250, sure have no complaints with it. Will shoot a great group, if you are on your toes and do your part. I would like to have the lrpv and if I were buying a new rifle of this type, it would be the one.

the 22-250 is an excellent chuck rifle.The difference you will find from your .223( also an excellent chuck rifle) is increased velocity,louder report,hotter barrel during multiple shot strings and increased throat erosion.If you're lookin for more reach, flatter trajectory,and deader woodchucks go for it. If you just like sittin down at a bench and punchin target after target after target the .223 won't get so hot and the shooting would probably be more enjoyable.The 322-748 and BLC-2 are poor choices for the 22-250 so nothing to be gained there.
If you enjoy target shooting with your pss you will love benchrest shooting with a 6ppc. Used guns can be picked up in the $ 1500 range and you will get more help on this site than you can stand------for free.

Lrpv 6br (n)

I took a new LRPV Savage action added a McGowan barrel in 6BR (N) and put it in a SSS Dog Tracker stock. I have shot it in club matches at 1000 and 600 yds. My smallest group at 1000 yards was 6.750", and 2.259 at 600. LRPV Savages will shoot.

Nuff said.
